AXT's Indium Phosphide Surge: How One Semiconductor Supplier Turned AI Demand Into a 457% Rally

The numbers coming out of AXT's camp these days would have seemed almost unthinkable a year ago. The semiconductor specialist, whose indium phosphide (InP) substrates sit at the heart of optical connections powering AI data centers, saw its shares close at €71.60 on Friday — a gain of nearly 10% in a single session. That extends the stock's year-to-date advance to a staggering 457.20%, a move that has caught the attention of both momentum traders and institutional investors alike.
Guidance Blowout Reshapes the Conversation
What's driving the frenzy? It starts with a guidance revision that blew past even the most optimistic Street estimates. For the third quarter of 2026, AXT now expects revenue of roughly $66 million — a figure that towers over the $38.7 million consensus analysts had been modeling. On the bottom line, the company projects non-GAAP earnings per share between $0.30 and $0.32, more than triple the $0.10 that Wall Street had penciled in.
The confidence stems from a second quarter that delivered on multiple fronts. Revenue for the period ended June 30 came in at $47.6 million, up 164% year over year, while adjusted EPS of $0.19 sailed past the $0.07 consensus. Perhaps more tellingly, adjusted gross margin expanded to 45.0% from a razor-thin 8.2% in the year-ago quarter — a swing management attributes to better factory utilization and a more favorable product mix.
A $87 Million Vote of Confidence
Underpinning the optimism is a strategic pact with Lumentum Operations LLC, signed July 29, that locks in production capacity for InP wafers through the end of 2031. As part of the arrangement, Lumentum is making two prepayments totaling $87 million — $43.5 million each — which will be credited against future deliveries. The deal effectively de-risks AXT's ambitious expansion plans: the company intends to more than double its InP manufacturing capacity by the end of 2026.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying AXT?
That kind of visibility has prompted a flurry of analyst activity. Needham's Charles Shi upgraded the stock from Hold to Buy on July 31, setting a $90 price target and arguing that AI-driven demand marks a fundamental inflection point for indium phosphide technology. Northland Securities' Tim Savageaux reaffirmed his Buy rating the day prior with a more aggressive $125 target, making him among the most bullish voices on the name. B. Riley Securities also moved its target higher, albeit more conservatively, lifting it from $52 to $55 on July 31.
The China Factor and a Pivot to Hong Kong
For all the operational momentum, AXT's geographic footprint remains a source of concern for some observers. Morningstar analysts point to a significant geopolitical overhang: all of the company's wafer production and its ten most important suppliers are based in China, meaning exports depend on approval from Beijing authorities.
The company is taking steps to reposition its regional strategy. Beijing Tongmei Xtal Technology, AXT's subsidiary, has withdrawn its application for a listing on Shanghai's STAR Market and is now pursuing a Hong Kong listing instead — a process that media reports suggest could take roughly a year to complete.
Fresh Faces and Insider Activity
Governance changes are also in motion. Jia-Bin Duh, a veteran of Cisco Systems and Intel, joined the board on July 22, expanding it to six members. The company has also amended its articles of association to lower the quorum requirement for shareholder meetings, reducing the needed presence from an absolute majority to 33.3% of outstanding shares.
AXT at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Yet not all signals point in the same direction. Regulatory filings reveal that insiders sold shares worth $29.2 million over the past three months, with no corresponding purchases recorded from management or board members during that stretch. The sales come despite the stock's relentless climb — and after the company raised $632.5 million in gross proceeds from an April capital increase, leaving it with $749 million in cash and investments as of June 30.
Institutional interest, meanwhile, appears to be growing. A recent disclosure flagged a passive investment exceeding 5% of the company, a sign that the AI trade is drawing in larger players even as company insiders take some chips off the table.
