Ballard Power Wins Siemens Rail Order as UBS Cuts Its 2027 Revenue View
Published on 10/12/2026 at 07:02 | Editorial boerse-global.deBallard Power has secured a firm order from Siemens Mobility for 24 FCrail fuel cell modules, a deal that will power twelve hydrogen passenger trains in Romania. The modules carry a combined capacity of 4.8 MW and are destined for Mireo Plus H trainsets serving the country's Railway Reform Authority. The order, announced Wednesday, gives Ballard a concrete rail reference project — but its financial contribution sits years away.
Deliveries are scheduled for 2027–2028, with passenger service not expected to begin until 2029. That timeline matters for anyone trying to square the announcement with the stock's recent weakness. Winning a contract, shipping the hardware, and seeing it enter revenue service are three distinct milestones, and only the first has been reached. The order validates demand for Ballard's technology in rail; it does not represent revenue already booked.
A Service Layer Built Around the Hardware
Alongside the Siemens win, Ballard rolled out Fleet360, a program aimed at new North American FCmove-HD+ fleets. The offering pairs a performance guarantee for the fuel cell modules with committed service response and resolution times, and adds technical support, spare-parts coverage, training, and refurbishment options.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ballard Power?
A key component, FCcare+, includes a warranty on module power output covering up to 250,000 miles of fuel cell operation. That commitment applies specifically to the new North American fleets and cannot be extended to the Romanian rail order. The distinction is worth keeping in mind: Siemens is buying modules for a defined project, while Fleet360 addresses how those products are supported across their lifecycle. Operational progress on both fronts, yes — but neither translates directly into revenue already on the books.
UBS Trims Its Targets
Weighing against the commercial news, UBS kept its "Neutral" rating on Ballard and cut its price target from $6.50 to $2.15 on September 30. The analysts cited a lower revenue assumption and a reduced enterprise-value-to-sales multiple.
For 2027, UBS now models revenue of $157 million, down from its previous estimate of $180 million. Those are projections, not reported figures — but they explain how a fresh order and a more cautious valuation can coexist. Firm bookings demonstrate demand; delivery schedules and revenue assumptions define when that demand actually shows up in the numbers.
The Romanian contract strengthens Ballard's operating outlook without erasing the lowered expectations. What it does not do is close the gap between an order won today and the deliveries still ahead.
