Bank of America Cuts Renk to Neutral, Warning Gearbox Demand May Not Survive the Rearmament Wave

Bank of America downgraded Renk to Neutral from Buy and cut its price target to EUR 42.50 from EUR 62.50, citing doubts over long-term gearbox demand.

Bank of America has pulled its buy rating on Renk Group, downgrading the Augsburg-based gearbox manufacturer to Neutral and slashing its price target to EUR 42.50 from EUR 62.50. The move, unveiled Thursday, landed squarely on an already bruised share price.

The stock gave up 1.7% to trade at EUR 37.06, with the decline steepening to as much as 2.4% at EUR 36.81 during the session. It was the fourth straight losing day for the defense supplier, which at one point touched EUR 36.20 — a fresh 52-week low — and ranked among the weakest names in Germany's mid-cap index.

A Capacity Story With an Unclear Ending

At the heart of analyst David Holmes's more cautious stance is a question about what happens after the current buildup runs its course. Holmes considers the present level of gearbox production unsustainable over the long haul, a view that caps his assessment of the company's valuation potential.

The near-term trajectory, by contrast, looks robust. Holmes models capacity expanding from 700 gear systems in 2026 to between 1,800 and 2,000 drivetrains by 2030. What troubles him is whether demand can hold anywhere near that altitude once the decade turns.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?

Even a profitable service business does not fully offset that concern in his calculus. Renk's model, like those of peers such as Rheinmetall and CSG, leans heavily on the cyclical restocking of military inventories. Should those procurement waves eventually ebb, the argument goes, there would be little left to drive a further re-rating.

Where the Analyst Sees Firmer Ground

Holmes's European sector review points investors toward defense names with more durable technology profiles. Air defense, reconnaissance, surveillance, combat networks and electronic warfare rank as the more resilient corners of the industry. Accordingly, the bank issued buy recommendations on Hensoldt, Saab and Dassault Aviation while trimming its stance on companies with heavy exposure to land systems.

Hensoldt received particular attention: Holmes reaffirmed his buy call and lifted the sensor specialist's price target to EUR 94. Kongsberg, Aselsan and Dassault Aviation also feature among his preferred sector picks.

For Renk, the downgrade adds pressure to valuation multiples that were already facing scrutiny. Investors are increasingly asking how sustainable order books will prove once the current equipment cycle is completed — a question that carries weight even as the broader analyst consensus remains tilted to the bullish side, with twelve buy ratings still on the books.
