Bayer Draws Two Bullish Notes With Two Different Price Tags as Earnings Loom

UBS and JPMorgan both rate Bayer a Buy, but their targets and reasoning diverge ahead of the November 3 Q3 report.

Two of Europe's most closely followed brokerages have reaffirmed their constructive stance on Bayer this week, yet their price targets sit nearly a euro apart — and neither number tells the whole story. UBS reiterated a Buy rating with a 62-euro target on Wednesday, while JPMorgan kept Bayer at "Overweight" with a 61-euro objective a day earlier. Against Friday's close of €44.19, both imply substantial headroom, but the reasoning behind each call diverges in ways that matter for anyone positioning ahead of the company's third-quarter update.

At the heart of the split is a distinction investors would do well to keep in mind: optimism about Bayer's operations is not the same as optimism about its near-term bottom line. JPMorgan's Richard Vosser, for instance, models revenue roughly 2% above consensus but sees EBITDA coming in 6% below it. He also expects management to stand by its full-year guidance. Those forecasts can coexist — a confirmed outlook does not erase a softer operating result — but they hardly amount to an unqualified vote of confidence in earnings.

UBS's Matthew Weston takes a different tack, pointing to intact momentum in the agricultural division through 2026 and 2027 and continued dynamism in the pharmaceuticals business. Where Vosser is flagging a possible gap between sales and profitability, Weston is describing business trends. The two views are not contradictory so much as they are answering different questions.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Bayer?

Estimates Have Come Down

Consensus has grown more guarded in recent weeks. According to media reports on Tuesday, earnings per share are now expected at €0.41, down from €0.52 at the start of August. That is a forecast, not a reported figure — a lower bar for the upcoming release rather than evidence that the underlying business has deteriorated. Whether it signals trouble or sets the stage for a positive surprise can only be judged once the actual numbers land.

Pipeline Progress, With Caveats

Behind the analyst chatter, Bayer has delivered a steady stream of development news. Roughly a week ago, the US Food and Drug Administration accepted the company's marketing application for Finerenon — sold as Kerendia — in chronic kidney disease without diabetes, a filing backed by positive results from the Phase III FIND-CKD trial. Acceptance is a procedural milestone, not an approval, and it carries no revenue or profit implications on its own.

Separately, Bayer subsidiary Vividion Therapeutics dosed its first patient in a global Phase II combination study of VVD-214 and Pembrolizumab in previously untreated patients with advanced MSI-high or dMMR colorectal cancer. And around two weeks ago, the group unveiled plans to invest $2.2 billion in a new pharmaceutical production site in New Albany, Ohio, expected to create some 600 jobs. That project, too, is an announcement rather than a contribution to earnings.

November 3 Is the Real Scorecard

Bayer is scheduled to publish its third-quarter 2026 report on November 3, 2026 — the first hard data point capable of settling the debate. Only then will it be clear whether the revenue strength JPMorgan anticipates actually materializes alongside the softer EBITDA it fears, and whether the operating momentum UBS describes is already visible in the figures. Until that date, the research and regulatory headlines remain what they are: pointers to longer-term potential, not answers to the near-term profit question.
