Bayer's Nubeqa Data Impress, but the Revenue Line Stops at the Regulator's Door
Published on 10/24/2026 at 21:01 | Editorial boerse-global.deBayer has unveiled interim results from the Phase III DASL-HiCaP trial, and the numbers are striking: darolutamide, layered on top of androgen deprivation therapy and radiotherapy, cut the risk of metastases or death by 58% versus placebo plus standard care. The data were scheduled for presentation at the ESMO congress at 16:30 CET.
What the finding does not carry is a green light. Darolutamide is not approved for this treatment setting, so the clinical win has yet to translate into a single euro of additional revenue.
A $2.2 Billion Franchise Still Waiting on the Next Step
The drug is already a commercial force. Nubeqa generated EUR 2.39 billion in 2025, up 57% year on year, according to Fierce Pharma. That scale is precisely why the trial matters: any label expansion would land on a product with proven commercial traction rather than a speculative asset.
Bayer has not yet disclosed how it plans to pursue the regulatory path, Fierce Pharma reported. No additional revenue forecast can be derived from the efficacy data alone — the commercial upside remains contingent on approvals that have not been sought, let alone granted.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Bayer?
Reading the 58% Correctly
The trial enrolled 1,106 prostate cancer patients at high risk of recurrence. The headline reduction covers a composite endpoint — metastases or death — and should not be mistaken for an equivalent gain in overall survival. Metastasis-free survival at four years came in at 95% on darolutamide versus 88% in the comparator arm.
Tolerability tells its own story. Orion reported grade 3 or higher adverse events in 43% of patients on darolutamide and 36% in the control group, so the efficacy edge arrives alongside a higher rate of reported side effects.
Two Dates, Two Different Questions
Follow-up is ongoing. The final analysis of the primary endpoint — five-year metastasis-free survival — is expected in 2027, per Fierce Pharma, and that readout will be the real test of how durable the current results prove.
Investors also have a nearer marker on the calendar: third-quarter 2026 results, due November 3. That report will speak to the underlying business, not the pipeline. Friday's close of EUR 43.92 predates today's announcement and reflects none of it, leaving the stock's response to the study as a separate matter from the trading that came before.
For now, the progress sits squarely on the clinical side of the ledger. Longer-term confirmation of benefit and a concrete regulatory route are what would move it to the other one.
