Berkshire Stakes Another $136.4 Million on Lennar as Housing Bets Pile Up
Published on 09/26/2026 at 15:40 | Editorial boerse-global.deBerkshire Hathaway has deepened its wager on the American homebuilding industry, picking up roughly 1.68 million additional Lennar Corp. shares for about $136.4 million, according to mandatory filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
The purchases, spread across several tranches of both Class A and Class B stock, were made between Wednesday and Friday of last week. They are held indirectly through a group of insurance subsidiaries, among them National Indemnity and Medical Protective.
The move extends a position that has been building quickly. Berkshire crossed the 10% reporting threshold in Lennar on Sept. 17, then added further Class A and Class B shares between Sept. 17 and Sept. 21. The conglomerate, led by CEO Greg Abel, has now been a major Lennar shareholder for some time.
A Broader Push Into Homebuilding
Lennar is not an isolated bet. On July 24, Berkshire took full ownership of Taylor Morrison Home Corporation, paying around $6.8 billion in cash. The two deals together give the holding company a mix of full control and significant influence across strategically important players in U.S. residential construction — a shift away from purely passive stakes.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Berkshire Hathaway?
The strategy leans on scale and balance-sheet strength, adding to market leaders even when sentiment in the sector is cautious. Berkshire's deep liquidity reserve gives it room to buy against the grain while other institutional investors steer clear of interest-rate risk in U.S. real estate.
Mortgage Rates Add Pressure
The backdrop is hardly comfortable. U.S. mortgage rates climbed 32 basis points within three days, according to a CNBC report, squeezing prospective buyers and cooling demand for new homes. Lennar's third-quarter revenue fell to $8.05 billion, missing market expectations.
Wall Street has turned wary. Truist rates the stock "Hold" with a price target of $75.00, while Raymond James is gloomier still, carrying the shares at "Underperform." Berkshire, for its part, is using the muted valuation to add gradually through its insurance units.
Leadership Transition Runs in Parallel
The transactions come alongside an orderly handover at the top. Warren Buffett stepped down as chairman but remains on the board as chairman emeritus, while Howard Buffett was elected chairman. Abel runs the company as CEO and makes the key capital-allocation calls. Buffett has said Abel exceeded his high expectations and has been setting major strategic direction for some time.
Berkshire Shares Hold Near Record
Berkshire's own stock remains elevated. The A-shares closed Friday's Xetra session at EUR 666,000.00, leaving them just 2.9% below their 52-week high of EUR 686,000.00. Steady reinvestment of operating profits continues to underpin investor confidence in the group's long-term direction.
