BioNTech booked a net profit of EUR 184.5 million in the third quarter of 2026, flipping from a net loss of EUR 28.7 million a year earlier. The swing owes much to the absence of hefty one-off legal charges that weighed on the prior-year period. Strip those distortions out, however, and the picture darkens: adjusted net income fell to EUR 440.9 million from EUR 752.5 million, squeezed by weaker vaccine demand and rising research spending.

Adjusted earnings per share came in at EUR 1.76, ahead of what analysts had penciled in. That beat, though, sits alongside a year-on-year decline in underlying profitability — a distinction that matters for anyone reading the headline number as a clean turnaround.

Revenue beats consensus, but the top line is shrinking

Quarterly revenue reached EUR 1.29 billion, comfortably above the EUR 1.05 billion consensus figure. It was still 15% lower than in the same period of 2025, a decline BioNTech attributes to softer demand for COVID-19 vaccines. The legacy franchise continues to drag, and progress in oncology has yet to offset that pressure at the sales line.

On the guidance front, the Mainz-based company now expects full-year 2026 revenue of between EUR 1.7 billion and EUR 1.9 billion, lifting the lower bound from EUR 1.6 billion previously. Finance chief Ramón Zapata said the quarterly results had pushed the annual expectation toward the upper end of the earlier range, with investment continuing to flow toward prioritized oncology programs.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BioNTech?

Operating profit for the quarter stood at EUR 125.0 million, on revenue of EUR 1,289.2 million as reported by the company.

Roche takes the cost burden in one program

Alongside the results, BioNTech said it had exercised an option within its collaboration with Roche and Genentech. From January 1, 2027, future research and development costs for the program in question will sit with Roche and Genentech. BioNTech retains the right to royalty payments should development and commercialization succeed.

A mixed October for the pipeline

The cancer portfolio delivered both encouragement and caution in recent weeks. On October 25, BioNTech and Bristol Myers Squibb reported first global Phase 2 data for pumitamig combined with docetaxel in metastatic non-small cell lung cancer, tested after disease progression on or following first-line immunotherapy plus chemotherapy. Among efficacy-evaluable patients, the confirmed objective response rate was 36.7%, and median progression-free survival across all treated patients reached 6.9 months.

Breast cancer data published roughly a week earlier painted a less flattering picture. Trastuzumab pamirtecan, developed with DualityBio, met the primary endpoint of its Phase 3 trial but improved progression-free survival over investigator's-choice chemotherapy only modestly. The partners also flagged a higher rate of interstitial lung disease than seen in earlier studies, including severe and fatal cases in a small share of patients. Overall survival data were not yet mature, and the two companies are discussing next steps.

Research costs climb as the nine-month loss widens

IFRS research and development expense rose to EUR 748.1 million from EUR 564.8 million a year earlier; on an adjusted basis it was EUR 578.5 million. The adjusted R&D guidance for the year remains unchanged at EUR 2.0–2.3 billion.

BioNTech at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The cost of broadening the business is visible over a longer horizon too. For the first nine months of 2026, BioNTech reported a net loss of EUR 1,168.2 million, wider than the EUR 831.1 million recorded in the comparable prior-year period.

Development momentum offers some counterweight. According to the company, gotistobart nearly doubled median overall survival in pretreated squamous NSCLC compared with chemotherapy — results that underpin the oncology strategy even if they do not yet translate into durable product revenue.

As of September 30, BioNTech held cash and marketable securities of EUR 16.2 billion, a cushion that gives it room to keep funding clinical development. The quarter's headline profit and the narrowed revenue floor point one way; the lower adjusted earnings and the larger nine-month loss point another.
