BioNTech's push into oncology is producing a split-screen narrative. Late-stage data are validating the science, while an earlier program has just been shelved — a reminder that cancer drug development rarely moves in a straight line. For shareholders, the takeaway is that the company's valuation will increasingly hinge on how its oncology pipeline performs.

A Phase 2 Halt in Colorectal Cancer

Roughly two weeks ago, BioNTech called off a Phase 2 trial of Autogene Cevumeran in colorectal cancer. The decision followed a recommendation from an independent monitoring committee, which concluded after reviewing the data that the experimental therapy was unlikely to extend patient survival. The episode underscores how steep the hurdles remain in personalized tumor therapies, where even promising candidates can stall.

Gotistobart Delivers in a Hard-to-Treat Setting

The pipeline is far from one-sided, however. About a week ago, the Mainz-based company posted a meaningful clinical win in a different indication. Together with partner OncoC4, BioNTech presented updated Phase 3 results from the PRESERVE-003 trial at the IASLC World Conference on Lung Cancer.

The candidate, Gotistobart, produced a clinically meaningful overall survival benefit in patients with previously treated squamous non-small cell lung cancer. Median overall survival reached 18.5 months as of the July 17, 2026 data cutoff — nearly double the 10.0 months recorded in the docetaxel control arm, according to Reuters. The findings translated into a hazard ratio of 0.56.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BioNTech?

Those numbers demonstrate that BioNTech can show therapeutically relevant differentiation against established standard therapies in late-stage testing, reinforcing confidence in the scientific depth of its portfolio.

Combination Data and a Fresh Analyst Endorsement

Gotistobart was not the only candidate drawing attention. At the WCLC, data on a combination of Pumitamig and Elfetabart also took the spotlight, with media reports indicating the pairing surpassed expectations. That showing prompted UBS analyst David Dai to reaffirm his "Buy" rating on September 15, with a price target of $135. In the analyst's view, the lung cancer data underpin the potential of the advanced oncology programs.

A day later, Berenberg reportedly raised its own target on BioNTech from $132 to $140 while keeping a "Buy" rating, according to media reports.

BioNTech at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Market Response and the Valuation Gap

The stock has been grinding out a gradual bottoming pattern. On Tuesday, the shares closed at EUR 88.20 in German trading, a gain of 3.2% on the day, putting the company's market capitalization at EUR 21.30 billion. The stock currently trades at EUR 88.90, up 0.9% in today's session.

A visible gap persists between that valuation and the more bullish targets set by some industry watchers — a familiar dynamic for research-driven companies. Solid trial results build fundamental substance, but until clinical metrics convert into dependable revenue, market participants tend to price in the remaining development steps with caution. How quickly the remaining hopefuls clear their next regulatory hurdles will likely determine where the shares go from here.
