The Bern-based energy group BKW is heading into one of its most consequential stretches in recent memory, with a packed agenda that includes a first-of-its-kind battery storage agreement, a change at the top of its production division, and interim results that could finally give investors a reason to step back into the stock.

Shares have been stuck in a rut for months. The equity closed the week at EUR 139.60, barely a hair above the 52-week low of EUR 138.90 touched on August 13. From the October peak of EUR 198.20, the stock has shed roughly 30 percent, and the year-to-date decline stands at a painful 23 percent. The 30-day slide of 5.7 percent underscores just how persistent the selling pressure has been.

A Storage Deal With a New Partner

Amid the market gloom, BKW has been quietly building out its flexibility business. In early August, the company signed a tolling agreement with MaxSolar for a battery storage project in Darstadt/Stalldorf — the first collaboration between the two firms in the storage marketing space. The deal fits squarely into BKW's broader push to expand its footprint in flexibility marketing and storage solutions, a segment that is gaining traction as grid operators scramble for short-term controllable capacity to balance the intermittency of renewable generation.

New Leadership in Energy Production

There is also a changing of the guard underway. Philipp Hänggi is handing over his role as Executive Vice President for Energy Production to Margarita Aleksieva, who currently runs the Wind & Solar business unit. Aleksieva takes the reins on April 1, assuming responsibility for the entire production portfolio at a time when the company is actively scaling up its storage and generation assets.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BKW?

The French Connection

Beyond the operational moves, BKW continues to push its international ambitions. In June, talks surfaced regarding the acquisition of a 65 percent stake in Volterres, a French green-power supplier currently owned by Sun'R. Financial terms have not been disclosed, but a deal would bolster BKW's position in the French renewables market and align with the group's stated goal of expanding beyond its Swiss home turf.

What the Numbers Might Say

The market's attention, however, is fixed squarely on August 19, when BKW releases its second-quarter figures. Consensus estimates put full-year earnings per share at CHF 8.82, while dividend forecasts point to a payout of CHF 3.99, up from CHF 3.80 last year — a modest increase that carries added weight given the stock's recent trajectory.

Analysts, whose price targets average CHF 151.60 with a range spanning CHF 140.00 to CHF 169.00, see meaningful upside of roughly 16.6 percent from current levels. Those projections, however, predate the upcoming interim numbers and will likely be revisited once the results hit the tape.

The question hanging over the stock is straightforward: will the operational story validate the market's pessimism, or has the sell-off gone too far? The MaxSolar contract provides a tangible piece of evidence that the storage business is building momentum, independent of what the quarterly numbers show. But for investors, the August 19 report remains the moment of truth — the clearest signal yet whether the recent slide reflects deteriorating fundamentals or simply a market that has gotten ahead of itself.
