The Bern-based utility is walking a tightrope. With its share price hovering barely 0.8 percent above a fresh 52-week low, BKW faces a pivotal week where two major strategic shifts collide with the market's patience.

The stock, which traded at €140.00 on Thursday, has shed roughly 23 percent of its value since the start of the year. The pressure has been building steadily — on August 13, the shares touched a new 52-week trough of €138.90, and they have yet to meaningfully recover from that level.

A Price War on Power Bills

In a bid to regain momentum, BKW has announced a sweeping overhaul of its residential pricing structure, effective from 2027. The headline move: a nearly 30 percent reduction in pure energy tariffs. That aggressive cut is partially offset by a 5.9 percent increase in grid usage fees, but the net effect for a typical four-person household is still a saving of roughly 95 francs per year — about 7.6 percent annually.

The company is also rolling out a new "sunshine" tariff model designed to reward customers with smart meters. Participants can earn discounts of up to 40 percent on grid fees during periods of high solar generation. BKW will communicate the discount windows a day in advance, using weather data from MeteoSchweiz and tailoring the signals across five distinct regions. The goal is to smooth demand and improve grid utilization when solar output peaks.

The Earnings Crossroads

The strategic pricing shift comes at a delicate moment for the company's financials. The first half of 2025 was a bruising period: operating net profit tumbled 30.4 percent to CHF 210.4 million, while EBIT dropped 29.1 percent to CHF 310.7 million. Despite that slide, management reaffirmed its full-year 2025 EBIT guidance of CHF 650–750 million.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BKW?

Now, with the interim report due Wednesday, August 19, investors are looking for signs that the earnings decline is bottoming out rather than becoming structural. The central question is whether the operational result can stabilize against an already weak prior-year comparison — and whether the company will hold or adjust its 2026 outlook.

Analyst consensus, according to media reports, points to earnings per share of CHF 8.82 for the current year, with a projected dividend of CHF 3.99, up from CHF 3.80 for 2025. A cautious revision of the full-year outlook could put that anticipated payout increase at risk.

What the Charts Say

Technical indicators offer a mixed picture. The stock is trading 16 percent below its 200-day moving average, underscoring a persistently negative medium-term trend. However, the RSI reading of 36.8 suggests the shares are technically oversold, which could pave the way for a relief rally if the news flow turns constructive.

On the operational side, BKW continues to invest in its growth areas. In early August, the company signed a tolling agreement with MaxSolar GmbH for a battery storage project in Darstadt/Stalldorf, boasting 10 megawatts of capacity and 40 megawatt-hours of storage. Commissioning is slated for the first quarter of 2027. While such projects reinforce BKW's commitment to expanding its storage and flexibility business, the financial payoff is unlikely to show up in the near-term numbers.

Two Scenarios

If management signals stabilization and sticks to its guidance logic on August 19, the stock could find support near its current yearly low and potentially mount a technical rebound. The oversold conditions would certainly favor such a move.

But the bearish case is equally compelling. Another double-digit decline in operating metrics, without a clear inflection point, would likely confirm the downtrend. A break below the €138.90 support level would be a technical red flag, potentially opening the door to further losses — especially if the full-year outlook comes in more cautious than the market expects.

The market's verdict arrives Wednesday. Whether BKW's tariff offensive and project pipeline can offset the earnings drag will determine if the shares have truly found their floor — or if the slide has further to run.
