Bloom Energy's Soaring Sales Collide With a Capital-Drain Dilemma

Bloom Energy has spent the past year proving it can grow at a blistering pace. The harder question, and the one now dominating the conversation among analysts and investors, is whether that growth can be converted into cash.

The fuel-cell maker's third-quarter 2026 results, released roughly a week ago, laid out both sides of the ledger. Revenue hit $1.2358 billion, a jump of 138.1% from the same period a year earlier. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.94. Management also lifted its full-year guidance, projecting adjusted profit of $3.10 to $3.40 per share and revenue of $4.4 billion to $4.6 billion for 2026.

Then there is the other column. Free cash flow for the quarter was negative $181 million, following operating cash outflow of $27 million and capital expenditures of $153 million. Executives attributed the drain largely to a heavier working-capital requirement. That makes the next quarterly report, due in February 2027, a genuine test: it will reveal whether the cash picture improved in the closing stretch of the year.

A Demand Signal With a Timing Problem

The cash-flow debate arrives at an awkward moment for the narrative that has powered Bloom's stock. The company ties demand for its on-site power systems to data centers and to bottlenecks in turbines, pipelines and grid connections. So when two of the largest hyperscalers report infrastructure spending below expectations, the market takes notice.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Bloom Energy?

Microsoft disclosed infrastructure investments, including finance leases, of $45.2 billion — short of the $50.7 billion analysts had penciled in, according to CNBC. Alphabet also came in under forecasts. Media reports linked the shortfalls to pressure on Bloom shares.

Read more carefully, though, and the picture is one of deferral rather than retreat. Microsoft finance chief Amy Hood pointed to delayed GPU deliveries from third parties, and the company expects accelerated investment in the first half of 2027. Alphabet, for its part, signaled significantly higher capital expenditures in the coming year. Neither message amounts to a pullback from AI buildout; what shifts is the timetable. For Bloom, that distinction matters, because slower delivery of computing capacity muddies the demand timeline without demonstrating any decline in actual orders.

Analysts Split on the Target, Not the Rating

Wall Street's response to the quarter was a study in fine-tuning rather than conviction. Citi raised its price target on Bloom to $284 from $281 while keeping a "Neutral" rating — an upgrade in arithmetic only, not in stance.

Bloom Energy at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. trimmed its target to $292 from $314, holding its "Overweight" rating. Jefferies cut its target to $242 from $289, sticking with "Hold." Two more research houses lowered their targets without touching their ratings, and a fifth raised its target while leaving its rating intact. Across the five firms, the price targets published about a week ago ranged from $230 to $316.

The common thread: analysts are adjusting their math, not their views. The AI buildout still underpins Bloom's demand outlook, but delivery delays make the pace of that demand less predictable. Revenue growth alone, in other words, will not settle the argument. What investors will be watching just as closely is whether Bloom can turn that top-line expansion into stronger cash generation.
