BMW unveils the electric iX4 with up to 828 km of range while planning to cut 20 percent of divisions by mid-2027; shares sit near a 52-week low.

BMW is pulling in two directions at once. On one side sits the new iX4, a fully electric SUV coupé that the Munich-based automaker bills as a long-distance machine with up to 828 kilometres of range. On the other sits a corporate restructuring that will strip out 20 percent of the group's divisions and associated leadership roles by mid-2027.

The two stories collided on the market this week, and investors were not impressed. BMW stock slipped 1.5 percent to EUR 52.92, leaving the shares just 0.8 percent above their 52-week low. A separate reading put the stock at EUR 53.42, down 0.6 percent on the day, with the DAX member down 43 percent since the start of the year.

Third New Class Model, 108.7 kWh on Board

The iX4 is the third model to ride on BMW's Neue Klasse platform. Its headline number is the 828-kilometre range, achieved in the iX4 50 xDrive variant with a 108.7-kilowatt-hour battery. At suitable charging points, the vehicle draws direct current at a peak of up to 400 kilowatts, which BMW says translates into up to 387 kilometres of added range in a single short stop.

That combination — big battery, fast top-up — is the argument BMW is making to drivers still hesitant about switching away from combustion engines. Quick recharging on long journeys has long ranked among buyers' top concerns, and management expects the new vehicle architecture to deliver meaningful economies of scale as well.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BMW?

Two Launch Variants, a 612 hp Flagship to Follow

German pricing starts at EUR 70,900 for the entry-level iX4 40 xDrive. The stronger version with the larger battery carries a minimum sticker of EUR 75,900. A sporty M60 variant with 612 horsepower will join the range later.

Pre-orders for the most powerful version are due to open early next year, ahead of regular deliveries in the spring. Beyond its European home market, BMW is counting on demand from North America and Asia, where sporty body styles have traditionally sold well. The group's own bank is meanwhile trying to support sales through expanded insurance packages in private leasing.

US Sales Climb as the Cost Base Gets Rewired

The North American push has momentum. BMW of North America reported third-quarter 2026 vehicle sales up 3.4 percent to 100,210 units, with volumes over the first nine months ahead by 4.3 percent year on year. Those gains underpin the operating business during a transformation-heavy period, even as the BMW Group reviews its global structures.

In Germany, the group announced on 30 September investments of around EUR 2 billion in production of the next-generation BMW 3 Series. Roughly EUR 1 billion of that goes to the Munich and Dingolfing vehicle plants. The remaining billion is earmarked for the Irlbach-Straßkirchen site, where series production of sixth-generation high-voltage batteries began on 1 October.

AI, Buybacks and a Cautious Analyst Camp

The build-out comes with organisational changes. Alongside the 20 percent cut in divisions and leadership roles by mid-2027, BMW plans to deploy artificial intelligence more aggressively to speed up development and decision-making. The company is also continuing its share buyback programme, a measure that steadily returns liquidity to shareholders.

BMW at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Analysts remain wary. Jefferies lowered its revenue and earnings forecasts for 2027. The board does not expect to return to its customary long-term target corridor until the start of the next decade, a path tied to free cash flow of at least EUR 7 billion in the automotive segment.

For now, the market is weighing the heavy upfront spending on the model line-up against a demanding industry backdrop and fierce global competition — with the iX4's range figures and the slimmed-down org chart both still to prove themselves where it counts.
