BMW stock has surged 7.0% today, a striking move given that the Munich carmaker only yesterday trimmed its automotive margin guidance for the second time this fiscal year. The advance rests on a friendlier sector backdrop and hopes for a softer US tariff regime following the midterms — market expectations rather than any confirmed relief for BMW — with media reports also pointing to a better-than-expected quarterly margin and strong demand for the New Class.

Guidance Cut Meets an Operational Beat

For the 2026 financial year, BMW now expects an EBIT margin in its automotive business of between ?0.5% and +0.5%. Before the portfolio and structural measures, the figure would still exceed 2.0%. The company blamed additional costs from accelerated restructuring and portfolio actions for the downgrade, having previously guided to a range of 1–3%.

Yet the third-quarter figures published today cut both ways. The automotive EBIT margin came in at 3.4%, down from 5.2% a year earlier but ahead of expectations, according to media reports. Group revenue for the quarter reached EUR 30.45 billion, with both sales and profit below the prior-year level. Deliveries are now forecast to fall 5–9.9% this year, a steeper decline than the slight dip previously anticipated, according to Reuters.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BMW?

China Is the Drag, Europe and the US the Counterweight

Regional performance diverged sharply. Growth in Europe and the US only partly offset weakness in China, where deliveries dropped 24.8%. Finance chief Walter Mertl also flagged burdens from tariffs and purchase price write-downs tied to BMW Brilliance, while a supplier settlement on the integrated braking system lent support to the result. The quarterly margin therefore reflects operational difficulties and offsetting one-off effects in equal measure.

New Class Pulls the Model Cycle Forward

At the heart of the restructuring is a faster shift to the New Class. Strong demand for its fully electric models is accelerating the production ramp-up, and older vehicle generations — including several electric models from the previous line-up — will be phased out earlier as a result. That early retirement carries additional costs. The workforce overhaul is moving at a similar pace: the voluntary severance programme for indirect employees in Germany is to be wrapped up quickly on the back of high uptake, and CEO Milan Nedeljkovi? has announced that management positions will be cut faster too. The bulk of the organisational transformation is due for completion by mid-2027, with BMW still targeting an automotive margin of 3–5% for 2028.

JPMorgan Trims Its Target but Keeps the Faith

JPMorgan cut its price target to EUR 68 today while leaving its rating at "Overweight", factoring in the announced one-off charges and lowering its adjusted EBIT forecasts for 2026 and 2027. The bank's stance captures the tension in the stock: a positive rating paired with reduced earnings expectations. Alongside the unchanged free cash flow target of more than EUR 2.5 billion in the automotive business, BMW is also returning capital to shareholders faster than planned — a different accent from the profit warning, though no substitute for a recovery in current profitability.

What matters for today's move is that sector hopes and the quarterly margin beat outweigh the known burdens. A confirmed easing of US tariff policy has yet to replace that expectation, and the faster model changeover does not by itself resolve the weakness in China. Whether BMW delivers the accelerated transition and the personnel overhaul within its announced timetable will decide how the stock is valued from here.
