Building inspectors have ordered VfL Bochum to stop fans from bouncing in unison on the east stand of the Ruhrstadion, following a structural report that flagged the impact of rhythmic jumping.

The study found that coordinated springing produces pronounced vibrations — a so-called trampoline effect — that can cause discomfort among spectators. Crucially, the assessment confirmed that the stand's load-bearing capacity remains fully intact.

Which blocks are affected, and when the rule starts

The order takes effect from Bochum's home fixture against Arminia Bielefeld on 11.10.2026, which kicks off at 13:30. Blocks N2, O, P and Q are covered by the restriction.

Spontaneous celebrations after a goal are explicitly exempt. What is prohibited is only the coordinated, rhythmic jumping of supporters.

As long as spectators comply, the Ostkurve can continue to operate at full capacity. For the club, though, the directive comes with a demanding obligation: Bochum is responsible for actively monitoring compliance on matchdays.

Repeated breaches would trigger a tougher response from the authorities — a complete closure of the entire east stand. Should that happen, up to 10,000 additional fans would be affected by entry restrictions.

Supporters push back as renovation looms

The measure has gone down badly with the club's active fan base. Ahead of the second-division match against Arminia Bielefeld, the Ultras Bochum voiced sharp criticism of the building authority's decision, calling the ban unjustified. According to the supporters' group, no incidents have been recorded in which movement in the stand led to discomfort or panic among visitors.

A permanent lifting of the bouncing ban is currently envisaged only in the medium term. Authorities plan to withdraw the restrictions after the scheduled renovation of the east stand in 2028. Until that construction work is carried out, spectators in the affected standing areas will have to adjust their behaviour to head off the threat of the stand being shut.
