Infineon has secured a EUR 319 million state aid package from the European Commission for its Villach site, clearing the way for a manufacturing project the chipmaker values at roughly EUR 1.1 billion through 2034. The approval, reported by media outlets, covers a venture whose production lines will not hum until the end of 2027 — a timeline that underscores just how far ahead the German group is planning in gallium nitride power semiconductors.

At the heart of the plan sits what Infineon describes as the world's first high-volume fabrication of GaN power devices on 300-millimeter wafers. Rather than breaking new ground, the company will repurpose existing cleanroom space at Villach, an approach that trims both cost and construction time.

Enphase Tests the Switches, Qualification Still Pending

Commercial traction is already taking shape. Enphase Energy said on Monday it will build Infineon's bidirectional monolithic GaN switches into power modules for solid-state transformers destined for AI data centers. The parts are rated at 900 volts and, according to Infineon, have been tested and folded into development builds — though production qualification has yet to be completed.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Infineon?

Infineon's AI ambitions stretch well beyond that single socket. On October 21 the company struck an agreement with NVIDIA covering GaN-based power conversion systems for architectures running at 800 volts DC. A day later, Infineon joined NVIDIA, Microsoft and the UnternehmerTUM Accelerator to launch the Physical AI Growth Lab, a program aimed at European start-ups working in physical AI, robotics and industrial AI. It carries no equity requirement, is slated to run from January to April 2027 and will take in 10 to 15 fledgling companies.

Reference Designs Target Servers and the Network Edge

The company also used Tuesday to flesh out its reference-design portfolio. A 5.6-kilowatt M-CRPS design addresses enterprise servers and AI applications at the network edge, while a high-voltage power distribution board is tailored to the supply architectures inside AI data centers. For automotive customers, Infineon rolled out new OptiMOS-7 MOSFETs in TOLL packaging across several voltage classes; the 40-volt variant is specified at an on-resistance of 0.24 milliohms.

Elsewhere in its ecosystem work, Infineon named the winners of its humanoid robotics start-up challenge. AdapTronics took first place and earns a place in the company's Startup Co-Innovation Program.

Investors get their next hard numbers on 10 November 2026, when Infineon publishes results for fiscal 2025/26.
