Buybacks Outrun Earnings: Berkshire's Capital Discipline Faces Its First Real Test
Published on 11/08/2026 at 19:03 | Editorial boerse-global.deBerkshire Hathaway kept buying its own stock well past the close of the third quarter, adding roughly $2 billion of repurchases in October, according to Reuters. The disclosure lands alongside quarterly figures that show the conglomerate spending heavily on itself while the businesses underneath it earn less than they did a year ago.
The October purchases extend a program that already ran to about $9.6 billion in the third quarter of 2026 and roughly $14.4 billion across the first nine months. That the buying continued into a fresh reporting period gives the strategy a sense of continuity rather than a one-off deployment of excess cash.
A defensive profile and a widening lead
Support for the shares has come from more than the repurchase line. Reuters pointed to Berkshire's defensive, diversified makeup as a draw for investors, alongside the strength of its balance sheet and the return of capital to shareholders. Since September 30, the stock has outperformed the S&P 500 by more than 18 percentage points. The agency identified no single trigger for the broader advance, describing instead a combination of factors pulling in the same direction.
The earnings picture is softer
Against those tailwinds sits a weaker operating result. Operating profit for the third quarter of 2026 came in at $12.705 billion, down from $13.485 billion in the same period a year earlier. Net income attributable to shareholders followed the same path, falling to $22.112 billion from $30.796 billion.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Berkshire Hathaway?
Reuters attributed the decline to lower underwriting gains and sluggish demand at several retail businesses amid economic uncertainty. That diagnosis matters for how the buybacks should be read: the drag is spread across different operations, so a single fix will not be enough to turn the numbers around. Insurance results and retail demand would both need to improve.
One premium stream still flowing
There is a partial offset in the property and casualty reinsurance arm, where premiums have reportedly continued to benefit from the arrangement with Tokio Marine. Even so, net underwriting results across the insurance and reinsurance operations slipped to $1.352 billion in the third quarter of 2026. The premium tailwind, in other words, has yet to show through in the bottom line.
Sirius XM stake gets bigger
Berkshire also added to an existing holding rather than only to its treasury. A regulatory filing on Tuesday showed the company picked up about 924,000 more Sirius XM shares, lifting its disclosed position to 125.7 million shares. The purchases ran from October 30 through Tuesday, layering fresh exposure to an established bet on top of the program to retire Berkshire's own equity.
Berkshire Hathaway at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
What investors are actually weighing
The question now is one of emphasis. Should shareholders give more weight to how management is deploying capital, or wait for evidence that the earnings engine is stabilizing? A durable bullish case would need both halves to line up.
The next hard checkpoints are the coming earnings releases, with detail on operating profit, underwriting results and demand trends. If those figures show the insurance and retail pressures easing while buybacks continue, the October purchases will look like the start of a more convincing pairing of capital allocation and business performance. If the erosion deepens instead, the scale of the repurchases will matter less than the earnings power behind them.
