BYD has lodged a patent application for a battery cabinet system that submerges cell modules entirely in a dielectric fluid, a design aimed at sharpening thermal management and cooling performance. Word of the filing emerged Tuesday, with the application now sitting in examination. No timeline for commercial production has been disclosed.

The move signals that the Chinese automaker intends to defend its edge in energy storage even as it recalibrates its global footprint — a balancing act that has become the central tension in the BYD investment case.

Regulatory Scrutiny Crosses Borders

That recalibration is running into political friction on multiple fronts. On Monday, former Hungarian foreign minister Péter Szijjártó was summoned before the Hungarian parliament's national security committee, which according to AP News pressed him on his ties to BYD during his time in office. Committee members focused on potential national security exposure and on the employment relationship between the ex-official and the Chinese carmaker. Hungary ranks among BYD's most important European production bases.

The pressure is not confined to Europe. Executive Vice President Stella Li told Reuters that geopolitics now represents the single biggest obstacle to the group's international expansion. BYD has opted out of selling passenger cars in the United States altogether, describing that market as complicated.

European Registrations Provide the Counterweight

Operationally, Europe is delivering the good news. UK registrations for the brand climbed to 20,140 vehicles in September, an 80% jump from a year earlier, with the SEAL U DM-i taking the title of best-selling model in that market. Germany added 6,052 new registrations during the month, more than 3,900 of them to private buyers — a private-customer share of 65%.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Those gains underscore how much weight the export business now carries, broadening the revenue base regionally and steadily loosening the group's reliance on its Chinese home turf.

Home Market Still the Drag

Globally, BYD shipped 463,561 new-energy vehicles in September, up 17% year on year, though the pace cooled from August's 17.8% growth rate. Reuters reported that resilient exports offset persistently soft domestic demand. The company confirmed on Wednesday that January-to-September volumes reached 3,131,576 units, a 3.94% decline compared with the same period last year — figures management noted remain unaudited and subject to revision.

Roughly a week earlier, JPMorgan downgraded the stock to "Neutral," citing lackluster domestic demand, rising input costs and looming trade barriers that could blunt overseas growth.

Paris Debut and Da Han Rollout on the Calendar

Product momentum continues regardless. At the Paris Motor Show, BYD said it will showcase its existing vehicle and technology lineup and unveil a new model at a press conference on October 12. Two days earlier, the Da Han EV launches in China on October 13, with final pricing and delivery details to be announced at the market introduction.

Governance Refresh and a Sagging Share Price

Shareholders signed off in late September on several board changes: Cai Hong-ping and Li Yong-zhao were appointed non-executive directors, while Li Gang and Xu Tu joined as independent directors.

The stock, meanwhile, tells its own story of investor caution. It was trading at EUR 8.30 on Thursday, down 1.3% on the day and 12% below its 50-day moving average, with a year-to-date loss of 22%. Whether the Western push can permanently offset the home-market slump now rests largely on the export months ahead.
