BYD Hits 2,000 Highway Fast-Charging Sites While Slashing Denza Z9S Launch Price

BYD met its full-year expressway charging target early with its 2,000th station, while launching the Denza Z9S below pre-sale prices as shares stay down 17% in 2026.

BYD has checked off one of its own infrastructure targets ahead of schedule. On Thursday, the Chinese electric-vehicle maker switched on its 2,000th highway fast-charging station at the Baoying service area in Jiangsu province, meeting its full-year goal for expressway charging build-out before the calendar year had run its course.

The network now spans 278 expressways, according to company figures. These so-called flash-charging sites are designed to cut charging times sharply and make long-distance travel in BYD's own models more practical in its home market — a pillar of the company's effort to lock in customer loyalty and ease range anxiety on intercity routes. State news agency Xinhua puts the broader footprint at 11,586 fast-charging stations across 341 cities.

Premium Push Comes With a Hefty Discount

Days earlier, on Wednesday, BYD began official sales of the Denza Z9S, the new flagship of its premium brand, in China — and it did so at a price well below early indications. The electric sedan carries a sticker of between 255,800 and 325,800 RMB. Media reports put the entry price 64,000 RMB under the level set during pre-sales.

That gap says plenty about how hard automakers are fighting for share in China's upper-mid-market EV segment. BYD is keeping pressure on established rivals while trying to defend ground in a higher-margin tier. On paper, the Z9S offers up to 1,100 kilometers of range on China's CLTC test cycle.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Commercial Vehicles Head to Europe

Away from passenger cars, BYD is widening its push into commercial fleets. On September 14, its commercial-vehicle division presented its European lineup at IAA Transportation, led by the heavy electric tractor unit ETT 44. The truck packs a 651-kilowatt-hour Blade Battery, delivers up to 1,000 horsepower and is targeting a range of as much as 600 kilometers. BYD also announced a fast-charging system capable of delivering up to 1.5 megawatts.

Marketing runs alongside the product offensive. On September 17, the company extended a strategic partnership with media group Mediawan that places BYD and Denza vehicles in film productions such as Call My Agent!, with further joint projects planned from 2027.

Shares Stay Under the Weather

None of the operational news has translated into stock gains so far. The shares closed Friday at EUR 8.84, down 0.8% on the day. That leaves the stock down 17% since the start of the year and roughly 29% below its 52-week high.

Analysts point to softer operating figures and the unrelenting price war in China's EV market as the drags on sentiment. Investor caution reflects the margin pressure bearing down on the entire sector as a result of those Chinese price cuts. Even so, BYD is sticking to its playbook: standing apart from rivals through in-house development of batteries and charging systems.
