BYD has filed Chinese regulatory paperwork for a ground-up redesign of its Han sedan and a third-generation Qin Plus, setting the stage for a generational handover across the two model lines that underpin its domestic volume business. Documents lodged with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) disclosed dimensions and powertrain details, though no launch date was attached to either car.

The filings land as the manufacturer keeps its home-market momentum on a dual track. Alongside the mainstream refresh, BYD is preparing the Da Han EV flagship, which it is billing on a range of up to 1,008 kilometres and a Flash-Charging system that can take the battery from 10% to 97% in nine minutes.

September deliveries hold firm

September shipments totalled 463,561 vehicles, a 17% increase on the same month a year earlier. Electrified passenger cars accounted for 456,713 of that figure, with 6,848 alternative-drive commercial vehicles making up the balance. The Qin Plus overhaul is aimed at defending BYD's lead in the high-volume segments, while the Han continues to target the more profitable upper mid-size class.

Exports of passenger cars and pickups were the standout, surging 153.9% to 179,877 units, even as domestic demand stayed subdued.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Malaysia assembly and export headwinds

To shore up overseas supply chains, BYD signed a letter of intent in Malaysia on Thursday with Inokom, a subsidiary of Sime Motors, which will serve as its local vehicle-assembly partner in Kulim.

Trade policy, however, is turning less friendly. A deal between the European Union and China caps imports of Chinese hybrid vehicles at 350,000 a year. Jefferies analysts calculate that BYD, Chery and SAIC's MG brand together accounted for 90% of all sales of Chinese-brand hybrids in the EU during the first eight months of 2026, putting the planned curbs squarely in the path of the country's leading exporters. Beijing has also signalled it will cut the VAT rebate on exports of alternative-drive vehicles to 9% from 13% effective 1 April 2027.

Shares under pressure

The stock closed Friday at EUR 8.34 in German trading, down 22% since the start of the year as regulatory uncertainty and a fierce price war weighed on the shares. The price sits 32% below its 52-week high of EUR 12.30.

On the analyst side, CGS International trimmed its target to HKD 103.60 from HKD 114 on 7 October while keeping a Buy rating. The board meets on 29 October to consider the release of unaudited results for the first nine months of the year.
