BYD's 4.4% Rebound Masks a Split Screen: Base Access Curbs, Brazil Permits and a Citi Target

BYD shares climbed 4.4% in Hong Kong yesterday, riding a broader recovery across Asian electric-vehicle and lithium-battery names as investors moved back into the sector following the prior session's selloff. The advance was a sector-wide countermove rather than a clean re-rating tied to any single corporate headline — and the news flow surrounding the company pointed in several directions at once.

On one side sits a US military restriction. According to a Reuters report published yesterday, the US military plans to bar BYD vehicles from Kadena Air Base in Japan, citing security risks, with the measure set to take effect on Monday. The step covers one specifically named installation; it does not amount to a nationwide sales ban in Japan. That distinction matters for anyone reading the day's gain as a verdict on the news — a single-session move offers no guide to how much weight investors are placing on the restriction.

Citi Reaffirms Buy With a HK$142 Target

Providing a company-specific anchor amid the industry bounce, Citigroup on 15 October reiterated its buy rating on the H-shares with a target price of HK$142. The bank pointed to reduced political uncertainty and a less pessimistic outlook for both exports and the Chinese home market in the coming year — an expectation rather than evidence of operational improvement.

Citi's numbers carry a caveat. For the third quarter it projected a net profit of RMB 12.95 billion, a figure that explicitly excludes currency effects and the contribution from BYD Electronic. Investors comparing that estimate against reported earnings will need to do so on the same calculation basis.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

The next scheduled financial checkpoint is a board meeting on 29 October, at which directors will review and approve unaudited results for the nine months to 30 September 2026. Media reports indicate the third-quarter figures are due after the market close that day. Those numbers should offer firmer ground for valuation than the recent sector-driven rebound.

Malaysia Pact Stays Exploratory

Overseas, BYD Malaysia and Gentari signed a letter of intent on Wednesday to examine possible applications for BYD Flash Charging and battery-storage infrastructure in Malaysia. The arrangement is exploratory — not a confirmed infrastructure rollout. Its near-term significance lies in the collaboration and the assessment of potential use cases; no concrete installations or resulting revenue can yet be derived from it.

A parallel push is under way in Brazil, where Reuters reported yesterday that BYD is seeking approvals to double annual capacity at its plant to 600,000 vehicles. Alexandre Baldy, the manager responsible for Brazil, said the press, welding and paint facilities are close to completion. The distinction between expansion intent and approved capacity remains the key one: the doubling is a plan, and finishing individual production areas does not substitute for the permits being sought.

Product Offensive Adds Operational Colour

The product pipeline has been busy. BYD launched the Great Han electric flagship sedan in China on 17 October, priced from 235,900 yuan with a CLTC-rated range of up to 1,008 kilometres. At the Paris Motor Show on 12 October it unveiled the ATTO 8 flagship SUV with FLASH Charging, and on 15 October it announced a maximum five-star Euro NCAP safety rating for the SHARK.

Those launches and ratings give the recovery operational context, though they do not by themselves explain the share-price move — trading coverage of the session emphasised sector-wide buying. The separation is what counts: the latest buying impulse came from the market backdrop, while the 29 October report is where the earnings expectations will be tested.
