BYD's Charging Network Hits Its Highway Target Early as Geely Fires Back

BYD has wrapped up the highway portion of its fast-charging build-out well ahead of schedule, announcing on Thursday that it has completed its 2,000th rapid-charging station along Chinese expressways. The milestone, reported by media outlets, fulfills a sub-target the company set for itself back on March 5, when it laid out plans to install 20,000 so-called Flash Charging stations by the end of 2026 — 2,000 of them on highway corridors.
The early finish hands BYD a visible infrastructure advantage in its home market, but rival Geely is not standing still. On Wednesday, Geely unveiled its own charging system, which it says can replenish an electric vehicle in four minutes. According to Reuters, Geely pitched the technology explicitly as an answer to BYD's challenge, a framing that turns charging speed into the newest front in China's EV price-and-technology war.
BYD's own Flash Charging setup, presented earlier, can take a battery from a 10% state of charge to 97% in nine minutes — a figure the company has used to position itself at the front of the fast-charging pack.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?
New Metal on the Way
Product news is stacking up alongside the infrastructure push. BYD has released official imagery teasing the Shark, a plug-in hybrid pickup that will launch in China under Fang Cheng Bao, the group's dedicated sub-brand. Separately, the head of sales for BYD's Dynasty model line gave an update on the domestic rollout calendar, according to media reports: the Da Han sedan is slated for an official market debut on October 13. The battery-electric version of the new sedan is already in pre-sale, with the manufacturer quoting prices of between 249,900 and 299,900 CNY.
A Recall to Fix, Free of Charge
Not everything on BYD's plate is a launch. China's market regulator has ordered a recall of 183,211 vehicles from the Qin and Tang lines, built between 2014 and 2022, because brake-pedal bumpers may crack or detach. The company said it will replace the affected components at no cost to owners, carrying out the work through its authorized dealers.
Shares Stay Under Pressure
Investors have yet to be won over by the steady drumbeat of announcements. BYD stock closed Friday at EUR 8.84, down 0.8% on the day. For the year to date, the shares have lost 17%, leaving them 29% below their 52-week high — a reminder that a busy product and infrastructure pipeline has not translated into momentum in the equity.
