Goldman Sachs is keeping its faith in BYD ahead of the company's third-quarter 2026 earnings release, maintaining a buy rating on the H-shares with a target price of 134 Hong Kong dollars. The investment bank expects revenue of 242.936 billion renminbi for the period and net profit of 11.5 billion renminbi. The quarterly report is due on October 29.

The stock traded at EUR 8.34 on European exchanges, a modest gain of 0.7% on the day. Since the start of the year, however, the shares are down 22%. They closed the previous session at EUR 8.35, which puts the price 4.0% above the 52-week low.

A Flagship Sedan and a Battery Lead

Away from the balance sheet, BYD introduced its new flagship sedan, the Da Han, in China on Tuesday. The all-electric model arrives in three variants priced between 235,900 and 275,900 yuan. The longest-range version, a rear-wheel-drive configuration, delivers up to 1,008 kilometers on China's CLTC test cycle.

The company also strengthened its hand in the supply business. According to data from China's automotive battery industry association, BYD's battery installations in China climbed to 18.29 gigawatt-hours in September, giving it a 21.09% market share — a slight increase over the previous month — and keeping it in second place behind CATL, the sector leader.

Hybrid Exports in Brussels' Crosshairs

Trade policy has emerged as a complicating factor. Reuters reported on October 9 that the European Union and China reached a common understanding aimed at moderating the flow of Chinese hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles into the bloc. The arrangement could cut imports by several million cars over a four-year span, though negotiators have yet to disclose the details.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

For BYD, the issue touches a key growth engine, since the group leans heavily on partially electrified powertrains in its international business. The political understanding underscores the pressure on Chinese manufacturers to rethink their European distribution strategies, with local production and pure battery-electric vehicles moving to the fore. Technology is also being deployed to address customer concerns about range and charging times.

That strategy was on display at the Paris Motor Show, where BYD unveiled the fully electric ATTO 8. The vehicle uses a flash-charging system that, according to the manufacturer, can take the battery from 10% to 97% in nine minutes. European sales are slated to begin in the first quarter of 2027.

Local Assembly, Global Ambitions

Alongside the model offensive, BYD is building out overseas manufacturing. Its subsidiary BYD Malaysia signed a letter of intent with Inokom Corporation, which is to handle the assembly of partially disassembled vehicles. The companies did not disclose which models are planned or when production will start.

Operationally, volumes remain substantial despite the trade discussions. In September 2026, the group sold 463,561 vehicles with alternative drivetrains.

Mixed Signals Ahead of the Numbers

Market sentiment has been pulled in different directions. On September 29, JPMorgan downgraded the stock from "overweight" to "neutral" and cut its target price from 124 to 88 Hong Kong dollars, citing weaker domestic demand, rising procurement costs and trade-policy uncertainty. Media reports on Tuesday also weighed on the mood, pointing to discussions about European restrictions on hybrid imports and planned Chinese cuts to export tax rebates.

Two dates now anchor the coming weeks. On October 20, BYD plans to begin sales of the second-generation Seagull, for which pre-orders opened just over a week ago. Nine days later, on October 29, investors get their look at the books for the third quarter.
