BYD's Home-Market Slide Forces a Two-Pronged Response: Fresh Models at Home, Faster Growth Abroad

BYD's grip on China's new-energy vehicle market remains intact, but it is loosening. Data from the China Passenger Car Association shows the company's domestic sales fell 28.9% year-on-year in September to 246,816 units — a decline that leaves the automaker still holding the top spot with a 22.8% market share, yet under mounting pressure to refresh its lineup and look further afield for growth.
The stock has felt the strain. Shares changed hands at EUR 8.22 on the day of the domestic sales report, and are down 23% since the start of the year. The retreat came roughly two weeks after JPMorgan downgraded the stock, and it followed a Wednesday close of EUR 8.29.
A Model Blitz Aimed at the Home Front
Management's answer to the domestic slump is a rapid-fire product offensive spanning both ends of the price spectrum. On Tuesday, BYD launched the Great Han, a premium sedan priced between RMB 235,900 and RMB 275,900. The flagship offers up to 1,008 kilometers of pure-electric range and comes with fast-charging technology as standard equipment.
A second front opens later this month. According to media reports, the company plans to begin sales of the second-generation Seagull compact in China on October 20. The new version is expected to be larger than its predecessor and to add LiDAR sensors. Pre-orders for the model opened about a week ago, though BYD has yet to confirm the launch date through its own channels. Between the margin-rich premium segment and the high-volume entry-level segment, the company is trying to fortify both flanks against intensifying competition.
Overseas Deliveries Carry the Load
What the home market gives up, foreign buyers are largely picking up. Reuters reported that BYD's overseas deliveries of passenger cars and pickups jumped 153.9% year-on-year in September to 179,877 vehicles. Group-wide sales for the month reached 463,561 units.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?
The international push has more room to run. At the Paris Motor Show on Monday, BYD unveiled the ATTO 8, a seven-seat SUV flagship slated for Europe in the first quarter of 2027. The vehicle pairs a 115-kilowatt-hour second-generation Blade battery with charging capability that takes the pack from 10% to 97% in nine minutes, according to company figures.
A Year-End Target That Demands a Sprint
Even with exports surging, the full-year picture is demanding. UOB Kay Hian reaffirmed its buy rating on October 9 but laid out the scale of the task: to reach its stated goal of five million vehicles in 2026, BYD must deliver an average of 622,800 units per month over the final three months of the year.
The first nine months explain why the bar is set so high. From January through September, BYD sold a total of 3,131,576 new-energy vehicles — a 3.94% decline from the same period a year earlier. Sales picked up toward the end of the quarter, but the momentum is unevenly distributed: Chinese demand remains sluggish, while the international business is growing rapidly in importance.
Headwinds Beyond the Home Market
The export engine is not without its own obstacles. Executive Vice President Stella Li has called geopolitical tensions the single biggest challenge to the company's continued expansion. Management has ruled out passenger-car sales in the United States for the current period.
Policy is adding pressure as well. China's Ministry of Finance announced it will cut the value-added tax export rebate for new-energy vehicles from 13% to 9% on April 1, 2027, a change that could squeeze margins on overseas sales over the medium term.
October 29 in Focus
The next hard data point arrives at the end of the month. BYD's board of directors meets on October 29 to review and approve unaudited results for the third quarter and the first nine months of the year. For investors, the central question is how profitable the overseas expansion has proven to be — and whether it can offset the drag from a softening Chinese market.
