BYD's Hong Kong Slide Traces Back to CATL, While China Opens Seal 07 Order Books
Published on 10/26/2026 at 20:11 | Editorial boerse-global.deA disappointing quarterly report from battery maker CATL, not anything specific to BYD, set the tone for a rough Thursday in Hong Kong. BYD shares came under pressure as part of a broad sell-off across the new-energy vehicle sector, with media reports pointing to CATL's numbers falling short of market expectations as the trigger for the wider unease. The takeaway for investors: sector-level forces, not company news, drove the move.
The stock was quoted at EUR 8.06 in today's trading, extending a weaker trend that has knocked 25% off its value since the start of the year. Thursday also brought a fresh 52-week low of EUR 7.62. That caution among market participants reflects growing respect for competitive pressure in BYD's home market, where investors are watching closely how manufacturers balance technological innovation against profitability metrics.
Seal 07 Reservations Open, but No Binding Orders Yet
On the product front, BYD opened reservations in China today for the second-generation Seal 07. The larger sedan arrives with revised equipment as sales of the Seal line decline. For investors, the reservation launch is not yet hard evidence of a demand recovery: deposits remain refundable for now, and prices and delivery dates are still open.
Early interested buyers get priority in production and delivery, according to BYD, and can reclaim their deposits until they confirm a binding order. That gives the company an incentive to gather early reservations without tying customers down definitively. The distinction matters for how the news should be read. The reservation start opens the model's next marketing phase, but it proves neither firm orders nor future deliveries. Nor is the economic positioning clear without a price for the new vehicle.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?
The launch is planned in China. A European start has not been confirmed, so today's step does not imply additional availability for German buyers.
More Space, New Equipment
BYD plans the new Seal 07 as both a pure electric car and a plug-in hybrid. The electric version is to produce up to 300 kW. For the plug-in hybrid, an electric range of up to 245 kilometers on the WLTC cycle is cited. The body grows compared with the current electric model, and the wheelbase increases as well. Announced equipment includes a second-generation Blade battery, fast charging and the DiSus-M chassis control system. Inside, BYD is relying on massage seats and a Devialet audio system, among other features.
LiDAR is visible on the vehicle shown. Whether that means the God's Eye B assistance system is fitted is not confirmed. Full equipment variants are also still outstanding, so the product announcement offers initial clues about the upgrade but not yet a complete picture of the offering.
Seal Sales Slip as Model Change Gains Weight
The Seal line recorded 46,718 sales in September, a decline of 9.04% year on year. Over the first nine months, sales fell 14.11% against the prior-year period. Against that backdrop, renewing the lineup takes on more importance for investors. Larger dimensions and additional equipment can shift the positioning, but whether that produces more demand will only be settled by binding orders and deliveries. The next key yardstick is therefore concrete pricing: only then can the technical upgrades be matched against a commercial offer.
Paris Premiere and a Possible French Plant
Operationally, the automaker is countering market skepticism with a continued international product push. At the Paris Motor Show on October 12, BYD presented the ATTO 8 flagship SUV, which features the new FLASH charging technology. A few days later, on October 15, the BYD SHARK earned the top rating of five stars in the European Euro NCAP safety test.
Alongside the vehicle premieres, expanding manufacturing capacity is moving into focus. Executive Vice-President Stella Li said in a report by broadcaster BFM that the company is examining plans for a factory in France. BYD also announced a supervisory board meeting to decide on the publication of upcoming financial results.
