BYD's Japanese Kei-Car Bet Shows Promise, But the Home Front Still Holds the Key

The Racco has done what few outsiders have managed in Japan's notoriously insular kei-car segment: it sold out its initial expectations within two weeks of launch. BYD's electric microcar, which debuted in Tokyo in early August, has already racked up more than 1,000 orders — a modest number in absolute terms, but a meaningful signal for a Chinese automaker trying to crack one of the world's most demanding markets.

The company plans to lean into that momentum, expanding its Japanese dealership network from roughly 80 locations today to 100 by the end of 2026 and 120 by the end of 2027. It's a deliberate strategy: while kei-cars have traditionally been the preserve of domestic manufacturers, BYD is betting that its EV credentials can carve out space in a segment that's only beginning its electrification journey.

The Export Engine Keeps Humming

That international push is showing up in the numbers. July deliveries of new energy vehicles hit 419,211 units globally, up 21.76 percent year-on-year and marking the third consecutive month of annual growth. The standout figure came from overseas: passenger car and pickup exports reached a record 179,841 units in July, more than double the year-ago level — a jump of 124.3 percent.

Research firm SNE Research puts BYD's first-half international deliveries at 497,000 vehicles, an 81.4 percent increase that was enough to displace Hyundai from third place among EV makers outside China. In the global battery-electric segment specifically, BYD sold 557,090 units in the second quarter, comfortably ahead of Tesla's 480,126 deliveries over the same period.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

The product pipeline shows no signs of slowing. Beyond the Racco's Japanese debut, BYD is preparing to unveil the battery-electric version of its Da Han sedan at the Chengdu Auto Show on August 21, with a claimed range of up to 1,008 kilometers on a single charge.

The Home Market Remains the Problem Child

For all the overseas momentum, the domestic picture is far less flattering. January-to-July sales of new energy vehicles totaled 2,227,722 units, down 10.54 percent from the same period last year. The decline has at least moderated — the first-half drop was a steeper 15.72 percent — but the trajectory still leaves BYD with a mountain to climb.

With 1.81 million vehicles sold through the first six months, the company would need average monthly deliveries of roughly 530,000 units for the rest of the year to hit the lower end of its 5 to 5.5 million target. That's a tall order even for a company that's been setting records abroad.

Diversification Beyond Four Wheels

BYD is also pushing into new territory. The company confirmed in late July that it would unveil a humanoid robot in August, with the launch reportedly planned at its "Di Space" experience centers. Details on use cases or commercialization timelines remain thin, but the move underscores BYD's ambition to position itself as a broader technology player rather than just an automaker.

Investors Are Watching the Math, Not the Headlines

The stock market has taken a measured view of the mixed news flow. BYD shares closed Friday at EUR 9.79, down 2.5 percent on the week. The stock is off 8.6 percent since the start of the year and 21 percent over the past twelve months, sitting 26 percent below its 52-week high of EUR 13.23 reached last August.

That gap between operational dynamism abroad and a languishing share price suggests investors are weighing the domestic demand weakness and the endangered annual target more heavily than the export wins. The expansion in Japan, the robot reveal, and the Chengdu debut may all be positive chapters in BYD's growth story — but for now, the monthly sales reports from China are what will ultimately determine whether the 2026 target remains within reach.
