The arithmetic facing BYD's management is unforgiving. With 1.81 million vehicles sold in the first half of 2026 and a full-year target of 5 to 5.5 million units, the Shenzhen-based automaker needs to average roughly 530,000 deliveries per month for the rest of the year — a pace it has never achieved in a single month. Bloomberg's calculations underscore the scale of the challenge: even July's solid performance, the third consecutive month of year-on-year growth, leaves a gap that the company's latest product offensive is clearly designed to close.

A Two-Speed Story: Record Exports, Sluggish Home Market

July delivered 419,211 new energy vehicles, up 21.76 percent from the same month last year. Yet the cumulative picture tells a more sobering tale. January-through-July sales of 2,227,722 units represent a 10.54 percent decline versus the prior-year period, though the negative trend is easing — the first-half shortfall stood at a steeper 15.72 percent.

The engine of growth is unmistakably international. Exports of passenger cars and pickups hit a record 179,841 units in July, a 124.3 percent surge year-on-year. SNE Research data shows BYD overtook Hyundai in the first half to claim third place among EV makers outside China, with 497,000 vehicles delivered internationally — up 81.4 percent. The company also reclaimed bragging rights over Tesla in the pure battery-electric segment during the second quarter, moving 557,090 units against Tesla's 480,126.

August's Model Barrage Targets Every Price Point

The timing of the new launches is no accident. BYD opened pre-orders for the Sealion 08, the Ocean line's new flagship SUV, with the plug-in hybrid priced between 230,000 and 260,000 yuan and the pure electric version ranging from 250,000 to 280,000 yuan. Meanwhile, premium sub-brand Denza began taking reservations for the Z9S electric sedan, starting at 319,800 yuan — roughly $47,100 — with a claimed CLTC range of up to 1,100 kilometers.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

The Chengdu Auto Show on August 21 is expected to bring another headline: the battery-electric Da Han sedan, boasting a range of up to 1,008 kilometers. In Tokyo, BYD has already launched the Racco minicar, a signal of growing confidence in international markets. The portfolio now spans everything from budget compacts to premium limousines, a deliberate strategy to capture demand across every segment.

Beyond Vehicles: Robots and the August 28 Scorecard

The company is also broadening its technological footprint. Late July brought confirmation that a humanoid robot will be unveiled in its "Di Space" experience centers this month — a move that positions BYD as more than just an automaker as competition intensifies both at home and abroad.

Investors, however, remain unmoved by the news flow. The shares closed Friday at 9.79 euros, up a modest 0.3 percent. The stock has slipped 2.5 percent over the past seven trading sessions and sits 8.6 percent lower since the start of the year. At roughly 26 percent below its 52-week high of 13.23 euros, reached last August, the market is clearly taking a wait-and-see approach.

The pivotal moment arrives August 28, when the supervisory board reviews the half-year results. Whether the new models generate genuinely incremental demand — or merely defend existing share in a fiercely competitive domestic market — will determine if BYD's ambitious targets remain within reach. The monthly sales numbers between now and year-end will provide the clearest signal.
