BYD is moving on several fronts at once, and the pace differs sharply from one to the next. A redesigned crossover is sitting on dealer lots in China, a premium brand has opened its order books, one model is already on sale, exports are surging, a Brazilian plant expansion is awaiting approval, and a US military base in Japan has closed its gates to the company's vehicles. For investors, the common thread is the gap between preparation and realised sales.

Tang EV Reaches Showrooms Ahead of Public Debut

Media reports say the third-generation Tang EV was already at Chinese dealers yesterday, with a public unveiling expected at the Guangzhou Auto Show. Wholesale deposits of 225,000 yuan and 240,000 yuan were cited for two trim levels — figures that are not announced retail prices and cannot be read as binding sticker prices for buyers.

Presence on a dealer forecourt is also a different matter from a market launch. The report describes preparations for the anticipated show appearance; it confirms neither a completed sales start nor end-customer demand. Those distinctions matter when sizing up the model's commercial weight, because dealer stocking and customer business are separate stages.

Denza Opens N8 Reservations, Seagull Already Selling

Alongside the Tang, BYD's Denza brand opened reservations in China on Monday for the revised N8, with launch scheduled for November. That model, too, sits ahead of its announced market debut — a concrete preparatory step, but not yet evidence of completed sales.

The Seagull is further along. BYD brought the second generation to market in China on 20 October. According to Xinhua, the line-up comprises five versions with official guide prices from 65,900 to 99,900 yuan. Announced features include the second generation of the Blade Battery and particularly fast charging technology. Unlike the Tang EV, the Seagull already has official guide prices attached. The product offensive therefore spans several stages at once: one vehicle launched, one taking reservations, and one being readied for an expected presentation.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Exports Outpace the Broader Sales Base

The overseas picture adds a second layer. In the third quarter of 2026, BYD exported more than 550,700 vehicles with alternative powertrains, according to media reports — more than double the year-earlier figure. Total vehicle sales rose 19% to 1.3 million units over the same period.

The two growth rates should not be conflated: exports expanded far faster than the overall business, making foreign markets a key growth engine. The numbers demonstrate rising demand for BYD vehicles, though on their own they do not answer the question of how profitable the overseas business is.

Brazil Capacity Still a Permitting Exercise

In Brazil, BYD is aiming for a larger production base. Alexandre Baldy, Senior Vice President of BYD in Brazil, said on 23 October that the company is seeking approvals to double annual plant capacity to 600,000 vehicles. The status of the project is what counts: BYD is applying for the necessary permits, so the targeted capacity is neither available today nor equivalent to vehicles actually sold. Intent to expand and realised output remain distinct measures.

Kadena Restriction Narrows Access, Not Sales

Political and security hurdles form the counterweight. According to media reports, BYD vehicles have been barred since Monday from driving onto the US military base Kadena in Japan, with the installation citing security risks. The ban covers private cars as well as contractor vehicles, taxis and delivery services — a restriction on access to that facility, from which no general sales ban in Japan can be derived.

Earnings Set the Bar for the Rollout

The quarterly report published on Friday provides the backdrop: third-quarter 2026 revenue of 221.488 billion RMB, up 13.59% year on year. Against that base, the upcoming model launches have to prove themselves, and their revenue contribution cannot yet be determined from product announcements alone.

The next tests are therefore execution — the planned November launch of the Denza N8 and the expected public appearance of the Tang EV. Only subsequent sales results will show what the renewed line-up adds to the business. On the international side, the yardsticks stay separate as well: sales momentum, permitting progress and market access each tell their own story about how far the expansion has actually travelled.
