BYD's Nine-Month Tally Slips 3.94% Even as September Deliveries Jump 17%

BYD shares came under pressure at the start of the new trading week, with the stock down 2.6% pre-market at EUR 8.42. The decline extends a subdued run that has shaved 21% off the share price since the beginning of the year, as a softer market backdrop in China, simmering geopolitical tensions and rising global bond yields weigh on investor appetite.
The cautious mood in Chinese equities is being driven largely by worries over export risk, according to Reuters. For BYD, that headwind arrives at an awkward moment, with the market growing increasingly skeptical about whether the company can hit its ambitious full-year targets.
September Sales Shine, But the Broader Trend Disappoints
The carmaker reported September deliveries of 463,561 new-energy vehicles, a 17.0% increase over the same month a year earlier. Of that total, 282,861 units went to customers in BYD's home market, while 180,700 vehicles were sold abroad — a 153.9% surge in overseas passenger car and pickup shipments compared with the prior-year figure.
Yet the strong monthly showing does little to flatter the year-to-date picture. Cumulative deliveries for the first nine months of the year reached 3,131,576 vehicles, a decline of 3.94% versus the same period in 2025.
Battery Capacity Tops the Agenda
Operationally, management is pressing ahead on multiple fronts. BYD says it continues to see robust demand for models equipped with fast-charging technology, and securing that supply has made expanding production capacity for the second generation of its in-house Blade battery the company's top priority.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?
The model pipeline is widening at home as well. Pre-orders have opened for the second-generation Seagull, with an official market launch slated for the fourth quarter. Pricing details have not yet been disclosed.
On the commercial side, BYD reached a production milestone of 150,000 new-energy commercial vehicles, marked by the roll-off of a fully electric Q3 tractor unit at its Huai'an plant.
Geopolitics Keeps America Off the Table
Management is signalling continued caution about entering key Western markets. Executive Vice President Stella Li described geopolitics on Thursday as the single biggest challenge facing the company's international expansion. Citing a lack of clarity and stability, BYD is holding back from selling passenger cars in the United States for the time being.
That restraint has not blunted momentum elsewhere. In the UK, BYD notched 20,140 new registrations in September — the best monthly and quarterly result in its corporate history. The company is also using major international trade fairs to showcase its electrified lineup, presenting its vehicle range at an industry gathering in Paris and teasing the unveiling of a new model.
Whether those steps will be enough to meaningfully accelerate sales momentum in the final quarter remains the central question for the manufacturer, given the geopolitical backdrop.
A Technical Bounce in Chinese Auto Stocks
Friday's session offered a brighter note, with BYD shares climbing 4.2% to close at EUR 8.65. The lift came less from company-specific news than from a broad recovery across Chinese automakers.
According to media reports, the sector-wide advance amounted to a technical rebound following declines in the preceding sessions. Concerns about demand during the seasonal peak quarter, along with trade tensions between China and the European Union, were already seen as partly priced in by the market.
