BYD's Overseas Push Accelerates With Macedonia Debut as Australian Deliveries Double

BYD launched in North Macedonia and expanded in Australia and Latin America, but a nearly 13% drop in September China sales weighed on its stock.

BYD is widening its global footprint on multiple fronts, adding its 38th European market while posting explosive growth in Australia and Latin America — a two-track expansion that is increasingly central to the Chinese automaker's strategy as competition at home intensifies.

The company launched operations in North Macedonia on September 30 through a new importer, offering seven models at the outset. Days earlier, on Sunday, it announced that the compact electric Racco would go on sale in Macau and Sri Lanka, with reservations already open in Macau and a Sri Lankan launch set for October 9. The moves signal a deliberate push into smaller regional markets with a tailored product mix.

Australia Doubles, Brazil and India Follow

The geographic broadening builds on a sharp acceleration in overseas deliveries. BYD shipped 76,614 new vehicles in Australia through the end of September, more than doubling the 37,923 units delivered in the same period a year earlier — a gain of 102%. In South America, where the company has operated its own manufacturing facility in Brazil since last year, the BYD King sedan topped the mid-size segment in September with 1,666 registrations. India added 836 units during the month, up 35.9% year-on-year according to industry body FADA.

Local production is helping to blunt the impact of trade restrictions and steady supply chains, while the company is winning market share from established rivals that have been slow to electrify their fleets.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Export Momentum and the Paris Stage

The overseas surge is part of a broader export boom. Global sales of vehicles with alternative powertrains rose 16.98% year-on-year in September to 463,561 units, marking the highest monthly total of the year, according to Reuters. Passenger car and pickup exports jumped 153.9% compared with the prior-year month.

BYD confirmed it will appear at the Paris Motor Show, where it plans to showcase its pure-electric and super-hybrid model lines. Media reports indicate an additional, as-yet-unnamed model will be unveiled on October 12.

Software Fix and Battery Patent

Alongside the product offensive, BYD is addressing technical matters. The company acknowledged a software vulnerability in the infotainment system of its Shark 6 pickup that allowed unauthorized applications to be loaded via the Android Debug Bridge. BYD said it will remove the unintended access through an over-the-air update once validation is complete. Separately, the automaker filed a patent for a battery unit housing design in which cell modules are submerged in a dielectric fluid. No plans for series production have been disclosed, and the examination process is still underway.

Home-Market Pressure Weighs on Sentiment

Despite the overseas gains, China remains a drag. Sales at home fell nearly 13% in September to 282,900 units, according to data from SMM and CPCA. Total global deliveries still climbed to 463,600 vehicles on the strength of foreign demand, but the domestic decline carries weight. A bruising price war among Chinese manufacturers is squeezing margins and unsettling investors, while cautious consumers in the world's largest EV market complicate volume targets.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The stock closed yesterday down 1.1% at EUR 8.41, with today's session adding a further 1.2% decline to the same level. Since the start of the year, the shares have lost 21%.

For investors, the medium-to-long-term case hinges on whether management can keep the international expansion running fast enough to gradually reduce dependence on China. Until overseas volumes fully offset domestic swings, the share price is likely to remain vulnerable to market turbulence.
