BYD's September Deliveries Hit 463,561 as Battery Expansion Takes Priority Over US Entry

BYD shares closed Friday at EUR 8.65, up 4.2%, lifted by a broad rebound across Chinese auto and EV counters rather than any single company announcement. Market chatter attributed the sector-wide bounce to a technical recovery following several sessions of declines, with worries over peak-season demand and China-EU trade friction already largely reflected in prices. Despite the day's advance, the stock remains down 19% year-to-date.
Exports do the heavy lifting
The operational picture offers firmer ground. Worldwide vehicle deliveries reached 463,561 units in September, a 17.0% year-on-year increase and a fresh high for 2026. With domestic Chinese demand subdued, overseas shipments carried the load: exports of passenger cars and pickups totaled 180,700 units, up 153.9% from a year earlier. That export momentum has become the primary driver of overall volume even as conditions at home stay demanding.
Institutional analysts took note. On October 8, SDIC Securities International reiterated its buy rating on BYD with a target price of HKD 103.6, citing the roughly 464,000 vehicles delivered in September. A day later, UOB Kay Hian kept BYD as a preferred pick. The brokerage trimmed its broader auto-sector sales forecasts for 2026 through 2028 after a weaker-than-expected first nine months, but flagged that rising international trade barriers could, over the long run, favor established leaders like BYD over smaller rivals.

Battery capacity and new models in the spotlight
Alongside the market recovery, BYD is pressing ahead on the operational front. The company reports sustained strong demand for its fast-charging models and has made expanding production capacity for the second generation of its in-house Blade battery its top priority, aiming to secure delivery capability over the long term.
The model lineup at home is widening too. Pre-orders have opened for the second-generation Seagull, with an official launch slated for the fourth quarter; pricing has not yet been disclosed. On the commercial side, BYD reached 150,000 units of alternatively powered commercial vehicles built, as a fully electric Q3 tractor unit rolled off the line at its Huai'an plant.
Washington stays off the map
Geographic expansion, by contrast, is proceeding selectively. Executive Vice President Stella Li, speaking to Reuters on October 8, described the geopolitical situation as the single biggest challenge to further growth. For that reason, BYD will hold off on launching passenger cars in the United States for now, citing a lack of the necessary stability and clarity in that market. Exports to other regions have been unaffected.
