CATL has given investors a date to circle: small-series production of solid-state batteries is expected in 2027. The announcement adds a technological dimension to the investment case, though it does not yet represent a proven earnings driver. Whether the development prospects justify confidence is a separate question from whether the company can close the gap between its revenue growth and its profit growth — and right now, the market is focused on the latter.

The Solid-State Plan Is a Milestone, Not a Business Case

The distinction between an announced production step and commercial success matters. A small series is not the same as broad commercial manufacturing. Nothing in the statement allows investors to derive a future revenue contribution or an improvement in profitability. As a technical milestone, the step could still carry weight.

The solid-state plans should therefore not be assessed in isolation. They complement the perspective on the existing business but do not substitute for convincing earnings development. CATL must first establish the link between technological progress and economic benefit before a credible re-rating can take hold.

Revenue Is Outpacing Profit, and That Is the Core Issue

In the third quarter of 2026, CATL generated revenue of 165.221 billion RMB. Net profit attributable to shareholders reached 21.246 billion RMB. The quarterly report was unaudited.

The scale alone does not answer the investor question. What matters is how much of the additional business reaches the bottom line. Reuters reported intensified competition in the battery market and results below analyst expectations.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying CATL?

Revenue rose 58.58% year on year, while net profit advanced 14.54%. According to Reuters, this was the slowest net profit growth in nearly two years. On a sequential basis, net profit fell 5.77% compared with the prior quarter.

The decisive benchmark is therefore not new products or higher sales alone. For an economically convincing development, profit growth would need to converge with revenue growth. The solid-state story would gain weight if the existing business simultaneously extracted more profit from its expansion. Conversely, even technical progress could not automatically offset weaker business results.

Morgan Stanley Turns Cautious on Mix and Margins

That gap is what shaped the latest analyst move. According to media reports, Morgan Stanley downgraded the Hong Kong-listed shares yesterday from "Buy" to "Equal-weight." The price target was cut from 705 HK$ to 390 HK$. The bank cited a weaker-than-expected product mix and disappointing profitability.

The stock posted a daily change of -2.1% yesterday. The assessment shifts the focus away from the volume of business alone. For investors, it also matters which products are driving growth and how much profit emerges from them. A recovery in operating credibility would have to address precisely these points of criticism.

The note also pointed out that CATL initially absorbed higher export sales taxes itself. The same applied to a 2% consumption tax before the burdens were passed on to customers. That explanation names a concrete strain factor but does not yet prove a sustainable improvement in earnings. In the negative scenario, profit development would continue to lag revenue even after such costs are passed through — and new technology announcements would merely accompany the central valuation problem rather than solve it.

Europe and the Swap Network Broaden the Story

The positive scenario does not rest on solid-state batteries alone. On October 20, CATL also presented a battery with an electric range extender as well as an advanced battery-swapping solution for heavy trucks. The system combines a standardized swap battery with an adaptable additional battery.

The main battery is compatible with the QIJI network. The combination could address different operational requirements without relying on a single uniform battery concept. Whether this generates additional profitable demand, however, remains an economic test and is not a reported result.

On top of that, CATL agreed on October 22 to deepen its battery-swapping cooperation with the BAIC Group. According to media reports, the arrangement covers joint work on vehicle and battery design as well as their development.

CATL at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

A European angle comes from a letter of intent with the German company Intilion, covering the German, Swiss and Austrian markets. If concrete projects and deliveries follow, the agreement could open up additional business. For a more favorable valuation, it would also matter that this business supports earnings development. The difference is essential: the agreement describes a multi-year perspective, not an already realized earnings contribution.

What Would Actually Change the Narrative

For a positive scenario, these approaches would have to do more than broaden the product offering. If cooperations and new systems translate into profitable business, CATL would have further starting points for earnings growth alongside the solid-state plan. Investors would then be less dependent on a single technological step meeting expectations.

The bear case is already embedded in the quarterly figures: strong revenue growth did not produce a similarly powerful profit increase. The competition described by Reuters could therefore also limit the economic impact of new products. Technological progress and better results need not arrive at the same time.

As long as CATL advances its technological projects while earnings development gains strength, a positive scenario can be justified. If profit growth remains clearly behind, the solid-state perspective should be weighted more cautiously.

The next concrete checkpoint is the small-series production expected in 2027. The first question would be whether CATL reaches this announced step. For an economic re-rating, it would then need to become visible what benefit the technology actually delivers. Until then, the investment decision should account for two separate questions: how robust the technical progress is, and whether the conversion of revenue into profit is improving. Only when both developments align would the long-term product perspective turn into a more convincing earnings scenario.
