CATL Widens Battery Footprint From Chongqing to Cairo as 70 GWh European Storage Ambition Takes Shape
Published on 10/19/2026 at 16:22 | Editorial boerse-global.deCATL is pushing ahead on several fronts at once, pairing a bigger-than-expected joint venture build-out in China with a fresh Egyptian plant contract and an expanding European energy-storage pipeline. The common thread across the announcements is scale — but also the gap between headline capacity figures and the revenue they may eventually generate.
The most concrete expansion centers on Times Changan, the battery joint venture with Changan. Media reports indicate the company will now target 75 GWh of capacity, up from the 50 GWh previously envisaged. Investment for the enlargement is set at 5 billion yuan, with a new facility spanning 700,000 square meters to be built between Chongqing and Sichuan and slated to begin operations in 2027.
The additional 25 GWh is expected to reach full capacity within three years. Once ramped, the project is projected to generate up to 10 billion yuan in annual revenue and contribute 300 million yuan in taxes each year. Those figures describe the intended economic scale of the venture rather than results already booked, and they are not a revenue forecast for the wider CATL group. For investors, the distinction between planned potential and actual business contribution is the key yardstick — full utilization does not arrive with the opening ceremony, since a ramp-up phase separates the two.
Egypt adds a second production leg outside China. According to media reports, Cairo has signed a contract with CATL for a local battery plant, with planned investment of more than EGP 2 billion and a targeted local value-added share of 40%. The first phase is to produce batteries for heavy commercial vehicles, while a second phase is earmarked for passenger-car batteries and energy storage.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying CATL?
In Europe, CATL is advancing sodium-ion energy storage, pursuing an order volume of 70 GWh, according to reports on Saturday. That number represents a target, or an aggregation of agreements, rather than a confirmed book of firm orders — no CATL statement has confirmed it as contracted backlog, so neither secured revenue nor a binding delivery schedule can be derived from it.
One building block is cooperation with German integrator Intilion. Its CEO announced on October 10 an agreement covering storage projects in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, with a development goal of up to 3 GWh over five years. The arrangement gives CATL's European push a defined regional frame, though it does not amount to a binding purchase commitment; its commercial value will depend on how many projects and orders actually emerge from the development plans.
A parallel tie-up with existing partner SERES was signed on October 10, a long-term strategic cooperation agreement. The second phase of their joint factory project envisages annual capacity of 10–12 GWh, and the two phases together are to exceed 20 GWh once completed. The companies also plan to work together on charging services and in overseas markets.
CATL at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The competitive backdrop in China is tightening even as these ventures take shape. September data from the China Automotive Power Battery Industry Innovation Alliance, published Thursday, showed CATL at 35.49 GWh of installations and a 40.92% market share, ahead of BYD at 21.09%. CATL retained the top spot, but its lead over BYD narrowed for a fourth consecutive month — a reminder of the value of new business avenues, without implying any direct link between domestic competition and the European storage strategy.
Equity markets offered little encouragement on the day. CATL shares traded at CNY 267.02, down 3.6%, as the expansion news failed to steady the stock. The company also bought back its own A-shares during the session, putting investment in additional production side by side with the repurchase. Whether the new plants deliver operationally will hinge above all on commissioning and capacity ramp-up proceeding as planned.
