The machines have officially taken over at Cloudflare. For the first time in the company's history, automated programs and AI agents now account for more than half of all traffic flowing through its network — a milestone that underscores just how quickly the infrastructure specialist has repositioned itself around the artificial intelligence boom.

Investors rewarded the shift on Friday, sending shares up 7.13% to €264.40 in European trading. The gains came after management lifted its full-year guidance, citing unexpectedly strong demand for AI-related services that propelled second-quarter results past Wall Street's expectations.

A Quarter of Firsts

Revenue for the quarter reached $696.1 million, a 36% jump from the same period last year and comfortably ahead of the $665.5 million analysts had penciled in. Adjusted earnings per share of $0.29 also beat consensus estimates of $0.27.

The traffic milestone, however, stole the spotlight. Media reports suggest machine-generated data had already overtaken human traffic back in May, and CFO Thomas Seifert now projects that non-human traffic could reach 1,000 times the volume of human activity within five years. The company's developer base grew by 2 million in a single quarter to 7.4 million, while the net retention rate held steady at a healthy 120%.

Gross margin remained robust at 73.1%, and adjusted operating income came in at $96.1 million, translating to a 13.8% operating margin. Free cash flow surged 69% year-over-year to $56.4 million, signaling that the business model is scaling effectively even as the company invests heavily in its AI-focused future.

Restructuring Costs Weigh on GAAP Results

The rosy operational picture, however, masks a substantial bottom-line loss. Under generally accepted accounting principles, Cloudflare reported a net loss of $170 million, driven primarily by $150.7 million in one-time restructuring charges. As part of a strategic pivot toward AI-based services, the company eliminated roughly 1,100 positions — about 20% of its workforce.

Management is betting that the cost of that reorganization will pay off handsomely. The company is positioning itself for what it calls an "autonomous economy," introducing digital wallets that allow AI agents to execute micropayments for APIs and services using stablecoins. The infrastructure builds on a partnership with Coinbase announced Tuesday, which established the "x402 Foundation" and brought forth "Cloudflare Wallets" and the "cloudflare.pay" service.

The product pipeline has been equally active. Wednesday saw the launch of "Cloudflare OS," an open-source AI workspace designed to enable secure deployment of AI agents within enterprise networks. A day later, the company unveiled its "AEO Visibility Dashboard," a tool that lets brands track whether AI assistants are recommending their products — part of a broader suite aimed at answer engine optimization.

Guidance Raised, Analyst Targets Follow

The upgraded outlook for 2026 exceeded market expectations. Cloudflare now projects full-year revenue between $2.864 billion and $2.870 billion, up from its previous range of $2.805 billion to $2.813 billion. Adjusted earnings per share guidance was also lifted to $1.25–$1.26, compared with the prior $1.19–$1.20 range.

Several Wall Street firms responded with immediate target hikes. Goldman Sachs raised its price objective to $389, while Oppenheimer bumped its target from $330 to $380 and reaffirmed an "Outperform" rating. Both houses pointed to the significant opportunity presented by the proliferation of AI agents, which increasingly require robust cybersecurity solutions.

Not all analysts share that enthusiasm, however. Jefferies maintained a "Hold" rating with a $290 target on Tuesday, and Cantor Fitzgerald nudged its target from $230 to $250 on Monday while staying neutral. Guggenheim remains the notable bear, reiterating a "Sell" recommendation with a $140 price objective.

Insider Sales and Institutional Interest

The strong results come amid notable insider activity. SEC filings show CEO Matthew Prince sold 33,631 shares at an average price of $296.10 on Tuesday, while CFO Thomas Seifert disposed of 55,000 shares at roughly $300.30 each — both executed under pre-arranged trading plans. On the flip side, institutional investors including Amundi and Wealth High Governance Asset Management have reported acquiring more than 30,000 shares each in recent weeks.

The stock's year-to-date performance stands at 56.45% based on Friday's close, reflecting the market's growing conviction in Cloudflare's role as critical infrastructure for the AI economy.
