Coherent's Optics Story Meets a Valuation Reckoning as Analysts Trim Targets
Published on 10/24/2026 at 15:10 | Editorial boerse-global.deCoherent finds itself in an uncomfortable spot that many AI-adjacent names will recognize: the technology case and the price case have come unstuck from each other. A broad technology selloff and more cautious views on AI-related optics weighed on the shares Thursday, according to media reports, compounded by a fresh round of price-target cuts. Yet no deterioration in the order book was reported — a distinction that matters, because falling valuation yardsticks are not the same thing as disclosed operational weakness.
Morningstar added a further layer on Wednesday, initiating coverage of Coherent and rival Lumentum. The research house pointed to photonics' role in AI networking while simultaneously flagging elevated market expectations. Both observations belong together: the first explains why investors are watching the theme at all, the second names the hurdle. What counts is not technological relevance alone but the relationship between expectations and their plausible fulfillment — and that is precisely where an industry narrative turns into a valuation question.
Target Cuts Without a Sell Signal
Susquehanna lowered its price target on Coherent from $425 to $350 on Wednesday, keeping its "Positive" rating intact; the revision was reported Thursday. The combination is the crux. The firm pulled back its marker without shifting to a negative investment verdict, so a target cut on its own cannot be read as a sell recommendation. Earlier in the week, TD Cowen analyst Sean O'Loughlin had already trimmed his target from $395 to $275 — and there, too, the buy recommendation survived. Both houses marked their valuations down while holding on to their fundamentally constructive calls, which yields a more nuanced picture than the share-price reaction alone.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Coherent?
Thursday's decline, meanwhile, landed amid turbulence in AI-related stocks and a wider selloff across optical networking. The move therefore cannot be cleanly pinned on any single analyst decision — context that matters more for interpretation than the hunt for one trigger.
A Positive Note Amid the Repricing
On the same Thursday, Coherent announced its inclusion in TIME and Statista's "America's Growth Leaders 2027" list. The company framed the recognition as a reflection of growth, financial strength and business momentum — a positive accent in a market climate dominated by valuation questions. Until the numbers arrive, the award and the recent target reductions are best kept apart: the former credits corporate development, the latter shifts analysts' valuation expectations.
Insider Filings That Weren't Sales
The recent mandatory disclosures also demand careful reading. Shares were withheld from Robert P. Beard, Coherent's Chief Strategy & Legal Officer, on Wednesday to settle tax obligations upon the vesting of stock-based compensation. A comparable transaction involving CFO Sherri R. Luther occurred on October 12. Both filings explicitly did not characterize the events as open-market sales, so they offer no evidence of voluntary share disposals by these executives.
November 4 Is the Real Scorecard
The next concrete checkpoint is November 4, 2026, when Coherent has said it will publish results for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 after the close of trading on the New York Stock Exchange — an announcement made on October 14. That date is where the debate gets tested. Analysts can change their valuation yardsticks; a quarterly report, by contrast, delivers business figures against which expectations can be measured. It guarantees no particular direction for the stock and substitutes for no valuation. The photonics role Morningstar highlighted explains the interest in Coherent. The lowered targets show that this interest does not translate into unlimited valuation headroom. What matters now is how durable those expectations look once the announced figures are on the table.
