Coinbase's AI Trading Rollout Meets a Wall of Analyst Doubt
Published on 11/03/2026 at 18:01 | Editorial boerse-global.deCoinbase shares jumped 8.9% today, but the rally owes more to a pair of high-profile stock picks than to any turnaround in the exchange's core business. ARK Invest bought 64,208 Coinbase shares across Friday and Monday for roughly $9 million, shuffling its crypto holdings by adding Circle stock and trimming Bullish. Keefe, Bruyette & Woods, meanwhile, reaffirmed its "Outperform" rating on the stock, though it trimmed its price target to $221 from $237.
The two votes of confidence land against a far gloomier backdrop. Morgan Stanley cut Coinbase to "Underweight" from "Equal Weight" on Monday, with analyst Michael Cyprys slashing his price target to $120 from $258. The bank pointed to weaker trading and revenue prospects, plus added uncertainty following the cyberattack on Binance. Its 2027 forecasts now sit 28% lower on revenue and 47% lower on adjusted EBITDA.
A quarter that cuts both ways
The third quarter of 2026 laid bare the split. Revenue came in at $1.22 billion, down 35% year over year. Transaction revenue fell 44% to $590.2 million, while spot trading volume slipped 10% from the prior quarter. The headline profit figure of $719 million looks robust until you strip out $715 million in gains on the company's own crypto holdings — leaving adjusted net income of just $77.7 million.
That gap matters because valuation gains on digital assets say nothing about the earning power of the trading franchise. Additional products are broadening the revenue base — prediction markets and derivatives together accounted for about 25% of transaction revenue in the third quarter — but they have yet to offset the decline.

Agents on the trading floor
Coinbase's newest push arrived Monday, when it opened automated crypto derivatives trading through Deribit to eligible users. Customers can link external AI platforms to their Coinbase accounts and let agents trade derivatives around the clock, with spending limits capping what those agents can do. The connection also enables micropayments for data and trading strategies.
CEO Brian Armstrong says agent-driven trading volume is growing roughly 20% per week, though it remains well below traditional trading. That growth rate describes the momentum of a still-small business rather than its current weight. The rollout is proceeding in stages after regulatory review, with a broader release of crypto options for corporate clients planned by the end of the fourth quarter of 2026.
The question neither camp has settled
What divides KBW from Morgan Stanley is not the potential of individual products but the speed at which Coinbase can convert trading activity back into durable operating income. KBW is betting on a recovery in crypto trading; other houses expect a slower climb. Today's gains do little to bridge that gap.
Coinbase at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Fourth-quarter 2026 results, due in February 2027, should offer the next real test of whether KBW's recovery thesis holds — or whether the cautious forecasts sit closer to reality.
