Copper's Bounce Offers Aurubis Shareholders Relief, but Richmond Remains the Real Reckoning
Published on 10/24/2026 at 02:30 | Editorial boerse-global.deA softer tone in metals trading gave Aurubis shares some breathing room on Wednesday, a day after the copper producer and its peers were dragged lower by a mix of macro jitters and sector-specific headlines. The rebound, however, does little to settle the questions that actually matter for the equity: how quickly the Richmond plant ramps up, and whether the demand Aurubis keeps flagging will show up in the numbers.
A Market-Wide Reprieve, Not a Company Story
Reuters attributed the improved mood to steadier equity markets and a slower build in inventories. That follows a rough Tuesday, when copper slid to a five-week low as rising LME stocks and fading COMEX premiums weighed on prices. A sell-off in broader equity markets, driven by doubts over the artificial-intelligence outlook, added to the pressure. Bloomberg reported the same downward drift in industrial metals, pointing to uncertainty over possible US tariffs on refined copper and the risk of outflows from elevated US stockpiles.
Tuesday's weakness had already hit Aurubis before the copper price made its move. According to dpa-AFX, both BHP and Anglo American reported declining copper output, and that was enough to sour sentiment across the sector. None of these catalysts originated in Aurubis's own operations — a distinction worth keeping in mind when reading the tape. Wednesday's recovery is best understood as a release of tension after a broad decline, not as fresh corporate news, and it does not by itself prove that the inventory overhang and trade-policy uncertainty have been resolved.
The Richmond Variable
Where the sector story ends, the company story begins. Deutsche Bank Research cut its price target on the stock to EUR 169 from EUR 177 on Wednesday while keeping a "Hold" rating. Analyst Bastian Synagowitz tied the revision to a ramp-up at Richmond that is proving more demanding than anticipated. He trimmed pretax profit forecasts for 2026 and 2027 accordingly.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Aurubis?
The note was not uniformly bearish. Synagowitz still expects a strong free cash flow, which leaves investors weighing lower earnings estimates against the prospect of healthy cash generation — the latter an expectation rather than a reported figure. That tension is the crux of the current debate: softer profit projections on one side, the promise of cash on the other.
A Record Premium Hangs Over the Market
Pricing for European deliveries tells a different story from the nervous spot market. Reuters reported on 14 October, citing three market sources, that Aurubis plans a record premium of USD 347 per tonne for 2027. The company declined to comment on the figure and pointed to anticipated strong demand. That reported ask sits alongside Codelco's own record premium of USD 350 per tonne for 2027 European deliveries, also reported by Reuters on Tuesday — a useful industry benchmark, though it does not confirm that Aurubis will secure its number. Nor is the premium a signed contract term or a contribution already booked to results.
Kurth Takes a Seat at the Table
On the strategic front, Aurubis strengthened its presence in the industry's main trade body. COO Tim Kurth was elected to the board of the International Wrought Copper Council on Tuesday. According to the company, he will bring Aurubis's perspective on raw-material supply — through both primary and secondary routes — to the role. The appointment is a signal of influence rather than evidence of an improving operating result; for that, the ramp-up and the financial statements remain the yardsticks.

The Date That Matters
The next scheduled checkpoint is 2 December 2026, when Aurubis publishes its 2025/26 annual report. Until then, the copper rebound may improve the backdrop, but hard answers on earnings and cash flow will have to come from the company itself.
