Quantum computing has spent years as a promise traded on paper rather than a product deployed in the field. That gap is now narrowing, and D-Wave Quantum is staking its commercial credibility on proving the shift is real. The Burnaby-based firm's Advantage2 processor is set to move into the logistics networks of the U.S. military, marking one of the clearest signals yet that the sector is graduating from physics labs into operational IT infrastructure.

On Friday, the Defense Logistics Agency unveiled the "Quantum Pathfinder" research initiative alongside CGI Federal and the University of Tennessee. At its core sits D-Wave's Advantage2 processor, paired with the company's hybrid solvers, tasked with untangling complex problems in inventory management, stock distribution and reverse logistics under demanding military conditions. The scope stretches beyond defense supply chains to civilian freight and retail operations as well.

Lorenzo Martinelli, D-Wave's Chief Revenue Officer, pointed to the innovation potential of the combined systems, which also open interfaces to generative artificial intelligence.

Order Book Swells, Profitability Still Elusive

The commercial momentum behind that push is hard to miss. Bookings reached $35.5 million in the first half of the year, a dramatic leap from just $2.9 million in the same period a year earlier. A growing roster of pilot projects and strategic alliances underscores the industry's pivot from academic research toward application-driven scenarios.

Yet converting that interest into recurring revenue remains the central hurdle for specialized hardware developers. Many contracts at this stage are still structured as project-based research agreements rather than durable commercial commitments. Despite the surge in bookings, the broader financial picture reflects the capital-intensive nature of the business. Heavy spending on research, system architecture and a worldwide sales push continues to weigh substantially on profitability.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?

A Boardroom Built for Big Industry

Management has moved to reinforce its industrial credentials beyond software partnerships alone. D-Wave brought Bernard Gavgani, an adviser to the BNP Paribas Group and former group CIO, onto its Board of Directors and its Cybersecurity Committee. His appointment signals an effort to align governance with the expectations of globally operating corporations.

State support forms the other pillar of the strategy. An agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce worth up to $100 million underpins the construction of a U.S.-based quantum computer, giving D-Wave valuable room to advance its systems. The company must still demonstrate it can hold its own in international competition, where rivals are hardly standing still and investors scrutinize technological progress closely.

CGI Partnership Targets the Enterprise Backbone

D-Wave is also working to close the gap between experimental hardware and everyday business use through its alliance with technology services provider CGI. The two partners aim to embed the Advantage2 quantum computer and hybrid solvers into existing corporate infrastructures, with logistics operations, transport networks and trading structures in their sights. Both sides plan to develop practical use cases together, though financial terms of the cooperation went unstated and no contractually guaranteed revenues were disclosed. Whether the collaboration translates quickly into sales therefore remains an open question.

Market Skepticism Persists

Sentiment on the trading floor tells its own story. The stock closed at €15.29, down 33% since the start of the year and sitting 62% below its 52-week high. That distance lays bare the skepticism toward technology companies whose breakthrough still lies ahead.

The mood is not uniformly grim. On Thursday, technical advances at sector peer IonQ triggered a recovery across several quantum stocks, and media reports indicated investors returned to D-Wave in that wake. The market, it seems, no longer rewards scientific milestones alone — it wants proof of industrial relevance. The era when mere demonstrations of computational advantage drove lasting share price gains has passed, and large corporations now demand measurable economic benefits when tackling complex problems.

From Pilot Projects to Production

D-Wave is courting that confidence on industry stages. At the Quantum World Congress in Maryland, the company showcased practical customer applications and progress on its gate-model architecture. The announcement of the Qubits Asia 2026 user conference, made a little over a week ago and followed by a 2.7% gain since, fits the same playbook. Further applications for the Asian region are to be presented in Seoul on October 28, 2026.

The structural shift toward quantum-powered data centers is unfolding gradually. Over the coming quarters, D-Wave's task is to show that pilot projects can mature into scalable contracts. Government backing and prominent appointments provide a solid foundation, but only when corporate customers run the technology in day-to-day operations will the market's advance of trust convert into lasting share price gains. In the months ahead, the project partners intend to finalize concrete use cases for the logistics agency before deciding on an expansion of practical testing in the next fiscal year.
