A quantum processor built for optimization problems is now being tested inside the supply chains that keep the U.S. military running. The Defense Logistics Agency, working alongside CGI Federal and the University of Tennessee, unveiled the "Quantum Pathfinder" research initiative on Friday, placing D-Wave Quantum's Advantage2 chip at the center of an effort to untangle inventory management, stock distribution and reverse logistics in demanding operational settings.
The scope reaches past defense logistics into civilian freight and retail supply chains as well. Lorenzo Martinelli, D-Wave's Chief Revenue Officer, pointed to the combined systems' capacity to connect with generative artificial intelligence interfaces as a particular source of promise.
That federal foothold arrives alongside a separate commercial tie-up. On Wednesday, D-Wave struck a partnership with IT services firm CGI to fold Advantage2 and its hybrid optimization tools into production planning, power grid optimization and maintenance scheduling. The two partners also plan to build applications for transportation, rail and retail — train timetables, supply chain control, delivery routing and workforce scheduling among them.
Bookings Jump, but Profitability Remains Elusive
The commercial traction is visible in the order book. First-half bookings reached USD 35.5 million, a steep climb from just USD 2.9 million in the same period a year earlier. A growing pipeline of pilot projects and strategic alliances underscores how the industry is migrating from purely academic research toward application-driven use cases.

Converting that momentum into recurring revenue remains the hard part. Many contracts at this stage are still structured as project-based research agreements, and the capital-intensive nature of the business keeps profitability under pressure. Heavy spending on research, system architecture and a global sales push continues to weigh on the bottom line.
Boardroom Reinforcement and a Dual-Rail Bet
D-Wave moved to bolster its leadership bench on Monday, appointing Bernard Gavgani to its Board of Directors and its Cybersecurity Committee. Gavgani serves as a senior advisor for technology and innovation to BNP Paribas' executive management and previously held the Group Chief Information Officer role at the bank. His background spans global technology strategy, operational transformation, AI governance and cybersecurity — credentials that enterprise clients tend to demand before signing off on sensitive IT projects.
On the engineering side, the Nasdaq-listed company (ticker QBTS) is pushing beyond commercial annealing applications with a dual-rail gate architecture. That design aims to cut the cost and complexity of quantum error correction.
Market Skepticism Persists
None of the operational progress has translated into share price strength. The stock closed Friday at EUR 15.29, down 33 percent since the start of the year, and it sits far below its 52-week high of EUR 40.41. Investor caution runs deep after years of outsized expectations for the sector.
Over the coming months, the Quantum Pathfinder partners intend to finalize concrete use cases for the logistics agency before deciding on an expanded practical trial in the next fiscal year. For D-Wave, the path from research pioneer to practical solutions provider runs through exactly this kind of industrial embedding — and the bookings data suggests the bridge is being built, even if the market has yet to walk across it.
