Deutsche Telekom: A Catalan Cloud Bid, a Raised Buyback Forecast and the SpaceX Overhang
Published on 10/24/2026 at 17:42 | Editorial boerse-global.deDeutsche Telekom shares fell 3.7% yesterday, and the trigger had nothing to do with the company's own order book. Reuters reported that SpaceX is in talks to secure access to at least 80,000 US mobile sites as part of a possible fourth nationwide network, and media coverage tied the weakness in German telecom stocks directly to those competitive fears. The stock moved with the sector, not against its own news flow.
That news flow was, on the face of it, positive. According to Cinco Días, T-Systems Iberia has been proposed for the award of a Catalan sovereign cloud contract worth EUR 400.4 million including VAT. Telefónica had also bid. The distinction matters: what has been reported is a proposal to award, not a signed contract, so the headline cannot be equated with secured revenue.
Two Analysts, Two Directions
Barclays weighed in on Tuesday, with analyst Maurice Patrick cutting his price target to EUR 32 from EUR 35 while keeping an "Overweight" rating. His stated concerns were sector-wide: satellite technology and agentic AI as threats to industry earnings. A lower target paired with an unchanged rating is a nuanced signal — the bank trimmed its valuation, not its recommendation.
JPMorgan moved the other way on Wednesday, also reaffirming "Overweight" but lifting its estimates for revenue, operating profit, earnings per share and free cash flow on the back of a stronger US dollar. For 2026, the bank raised its own buyback assumption to EUR 3.5 billion from EUR 2 billion. That figure is an analyst projection, not a company announcement, and should not be read as an approved repurchase programme.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
Building Its Own Satellite Option
Rather than treating technological change purely as a threat, the Bonn-based group is hedging. On Monday it signed a letter of intent with Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone to examine a joint bid for European frequencies for mobile satellite services, including direct-to-device offerings. No frequency allocation or acquisition has been announced — the memorandum opens a strategic option without yet delivering a proven economic contribution.
On the network side, the company reported initial AI-RAN lab measurements on Wednesday, developed with Nokia and NVIDIA. AI-based channel estimation lifted uplink throughput by 10% to 15%. It is a concrete technical result, though not yet evidence of corresponding revenue in the live business.
What the Calendar Will Settle
The next hard data point comes from the US. T-Mobile US, the majority-owned subsidiary that carries much of the group's earnings weight, reports third-quarter 2026 results on 28 October. Deutsche Telekom follows with its own third-quarter figures on 5 November.
Deutsche Telekom at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
For investors, the task is to keep the layers apart. Reported business performance is fact; lab measurements demonstrate technical progress; letters of intent open possibilities; and a potential SpaceX entry remains a competitive risk rather than a demonstrated hit to the business. A strong quarter would not stop a new entrant, and the prospect of fresh competition does not by itself prove that existing operations are deteriorating. Whether the coming numbers justify a change in how much weight that future risk deserves is the question the reporting season will answer.
