Deutsche Telekom: AI Lab Gains Meet the SpaceX Overhang

Deutsche Telekom shares dropped 3.7% on reports SpaceX is exploring a US mobile entry, even as AI-RAN trials showed 10-15% uplink gains in the lab.

Deutsche Telekom shares fell 3.7% on Friday as investors weighed reports that SpaceX is exploring a possible entry into the US mobile market, a move that would put fresh competitive pressure on the German carrier's American arm. The decline came even as the company's network engineers reported measurable progress in embedding artificial intelligence into its radio infrastructure — two developments that point in very different directions.

At the heart of the sell-off are talks, first reported by Bloomberg and linked to the sector's weakness by Reuters, over access to at least 80,000 mobile sites for what would be a fourth US wireless network. Deutsche Telekom owns more than 50% of T-Mobile US, which is why a US-specific threat reverberated through the Bonn-based group's share price. The distinction matters: these are negotiations, not a network in service. The pressure on the stock reflects anxiety about a future competitor rather than a market entry that has already happened.

Satellite Plans Cut Both Ways

Satellite technology sits on both sides of the ledger. It looms as a potential rival to established mobile operators, yet Deutsche Telekom is also probing its own options in space-based communication. Alongside Orange, TelefĂłnica and Vodafone, it signed a letter of intent on Tuesday to examine a joint spectrum bid in Europe. A satellite partner has yet to be chosen, and no binding offer can be inferred from the announcement.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

On the operational front, the group disclosed on Wednesday — together with Nokia and NVIDIA — early results from AI-RAN trials. An AI-based channel estimation technique lifted uplink throughput by 10% to 15% in laboratory measurements. A field test with commercial systems is the planned next step. The caveat for investors is plain: the figures demonstrate technical progress under lab conditions, not a proven improvement in live network operations, and no quantified earnings impact can yet be derived from the measured gain.

Enterprise AI Ambitions on a Separate Track

The AI push also forms part of the group's growth blueprint. Outside the US, Deutsche Telekom expects roughly EUR 250 million in AI-related revenue with business customers this year, with that figure targeted to climb to around EUR 800 million by 2030. Those ambitions should not be conflated with the lab results: the technical findings illustrate a possible application for AI in the network, while the revenue targets concern the enterprise business outside America.

At its AI investor day on October 5, the company reaffirmed both its guidance and its medium-term objectives. JPMorgan, for its part, kept Deutsche Telekom at "Overweight" on Wednesday with a price target of EUR 38, according to dpa-AFX — a reminder that alongside the competitive worries, at least one major analyst house remains constructive.

November 5 as the Next Yardstick

The next fixed date for a financial read on the company is November 5, when third-quarter 2026 results are due. Until then, confirmed group targets and early technical wins sit opposite a competitive risk that remains unresolved. The quarterly figures will offer the next opportunity to gauge operating momentum, while the SpaceX reports speak to how the competitive landscape might shift. Neither answers the other — and neither, on its own, translates into a concrete change in revenue or profit.
