Deutsche Telekom Builds Out Media and Travel Platforms as Bernstein Cuts to Hold

Deutsche Telekom spent the week rolling out new services across its media, travel and connectivity businesses, even as one prominent research house turned more guarded on the stock.
The Bonn-based carrier confirmed it has locked up exclusive German rights to the Basketball Champions League, which it will carry on its MagentaSport platform. Beginning with the 2026/27 campaign on 6 October, every game involving a German club will be shown live and exclusively, with the package expanding to cover the entire competition from the quarter-final stage onward. Telekom declined to disclose the financial terms of the agreement.
The sports deal is the latest in a string of moves aimed at broadening what the group offers consumers and business customers alike. On Wednesday, the company folded the HBO Max streaming service into its MagentaTV television product, launching with six separate add-on options for subscribers.
Travel eSIM, Iridium Roaming and a Leaner Store Network
Telekom's platform push extends beyond entertainment. T-Travel, introduced on Monday, is a digital service supplying eSIM-based data packages for more than 200 destinations worldwide. It is aimed at travellers and operates independently of a user's existing mobile contract.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
On the infrastructure side, the group has widened its Internet of Things roaming footprint by adding Iridium's low-earth-orbit satellite network, giving customers with compatible narrowband devices broader coverage. The integration and a global roaming agreement with Iridium were wrapped up only days ago, making the partner's LEO constellation commercially available to Telekom IoT clients.
Physical retail remains part of the strategy as well. Telekom said on Thursday that it plans to open 50 smaller, flexible shop formats across Germany in 2027. The outlets are intended to complement the existing branch network, pairing in-person advice with digital processes — a response, management has signalled, to shifting consumer habits around shopping and consultation.
Oktoberfest Data Load Highlights Network Demand
Evidence of how hard Telekom's networks are already working came from Munich. On Monday the operator reported 57.7 terabytes of data carried across the Oktoberfest grounds during the festival's opening weekend, an 18% increase on the same period a year earlier. More than half of that traffic ran over 5G.
Against that operational backdrop, analysts have grown warier. Bernstein downgraded the shares on Thursday from "Outperform" to "Market-Perform" and cut its price target sharply to EUR 28.10 from EUR 37. According to media reports, the analysts pointed to uncertainty surrounding a possible merger at US subsidiary T-Mobile US, alongside mounting competitive pressure in the domestic broadband market.
The stock took the move largely in stride. Deutsche Telekom finished Friday's Xetra session at EUR 27.09, a gain of 0.5%, leaving the DAX member with a market capitalisation of EUR 128.32 billion. The shares continue to trade 5.5% below their 200-day moving average of EUR 28.66.
