Deutsche Telekom: JPMorgan Lifts Buyback Forecast as Lab-Stage AI Projects Await Their Real-World Test
Published on 10/22/2026 at 15:10 | Editorial boerse-global.deJPMorgan has raised its medium-term expectations for Deutsche Telekom, and the reasoning behind the upgrade is worth separating from the headline number. Analyst Akhil Dattani pointed to recent dollar strength as the driver, lifting his projections for revenue, EBITDA, earnings per share and free cash flow. The buyback forecast got a bigger boost still: for 2026 he now expects EUR 3.5 billion of share repurchases, up from EUR 2 billion.
What did not move was the price target. JPMorgan kept its "Overweight" rating and its EUR 38 target in place, a level that sits well above the current share price of EUR 25.79. The distinction matters for anyone reading the note: the higher buyback figure is an analyst projection, not a fresh commitment from the company, and a rosier business outlook has not translated into a higher valuation mark.
Barclays moved in the opposite direction on the target, trimming its own from EUR 35 to EUR 32 on Tuesday while also maintaining "Overweight." Its case rests on the defensive qualities of telecom stocks. So the two houses share a positive rating but diverge on where they see the stock going — hardly a uniform signal of rising price targets across the board.
Buybacks Already Underway
Deutsche Telekom is not waiting on forecasts to return capital. The company reported repurchasing 6,707,740 shares in its running buyback programme between 12 and 16 October inclusive. Those completed transactions demonstrate that the existing programme is being executed, though they do not by themselves validate JPMorgan's raised estimate for the full-year volume. Executed purchases and a projection for further returns remain two separate things.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
The next hard data point arrives on 05.11.2026, when Deutsche Telekom publishes its third-quarter 2026 results. That release will be the moment to separate reported performance from the analyst's more optimistic assumptions.
ELARA Stays in Simulation
On the technology side, the company is working with Currenta and Wandelbots on ELARA, a project unveiled Tuesday that targets the virtual automation of laboratory workflows. T-Systems supplies the cloud infrastructure through its Industrial AI Cloud, which the partners are using for simulations of virtual lab automation. A later step involving real robots is under examination — not a confirmed deployment.
That boundary defines what the project can and cannot tell investors. ELARA evidences work on an industrial application rather than its use in day-to-day lab operations, so no assured contribution to results can be derived from it yet. Its value for now lies in testing a possible route to market for the Industrial AI Cloud. The broader question for shareholders — how far Deutsche Telekom's AI efforts have moved beyond technical trials — gets a clear answer here: as far as virtual testing with partners.

A Measured Gain in Mobile
A second example of that same development stage came a day earlier, alongside Nokia. In lab tests using AI-based channel estimation, the partners achieved 10% to 15% higher uplink throughput, with measurements taken in Bonn and Oulu. Where ELARA centres on automating lab processes, this work addresses the performance of mobile technology itself. Both share a common limit: the results stem from simulations and laboratory tests, not from proven benefits in widespread use.
For investors, then, these are development updates first and foremost. ELARA shows an industrial application approach; the Nokia tests deliver measurable technical progress under lab conditions. Until the Q3 figures land on 05.11.2026, the decisive operational test for ELARA remains whether the simulation ever gives way to real robot operations.
