Deutsche Telekom Pairs Cloudflare Alliance With Fiber Rollout as Bernstein Retreats

Deutsche Telekom spent Tuesday broadening its enterprise footprint on two fronts, unveiling a cybersecurity partnership with Cloudflare and a new AI-driven billing tool for health insurers, even as its shares continued to drift lower.
The stock slipped 1.5% in today's session, changing hands at 26.40 euros, and now sits 23% beneath its 52-week high of 34.35 euros. The decline has unfolded against a backdrop of mounting investor unease over the group's structural direction rather than its day-to-day operations.
Cloudflare tie-up targets business customers
At the heart of the Bonn-based DAX heavyweight's latest move is a strategic alliance with US specialist Cloudflare that couples the two companies' network infrastructures directly. Corporate clients are expected to gain from faster response times and more reliable data transmission as a result of the link-up, while Deutsche Telekom will fold cyberattack protection functions squarely into its sales offering.
Operational delivery falls to T-Systems, the group's IT arm for large corporate accounts, which will embed Cloudflare's security and connectivity products into its own service portfolio. The push speaks to business customers that are leaning ever more heavily on cloud applications as they digitize, while simultaneously demanding greater resilience from their IT architectures.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
Fiber buildout and a health-sector software play
Running alongside the Cloudflare announcement, the group reported that 222,000 additional fiber connections were completed in August, lifting the total number of households and businesses able to book fiber tariffs with bandwidths of up to 2,000 Mbit/s to 14.1 million.
Deutsche Telekom also disclosed a collaboration with provider caery. Together the partners are rolling out an artificial intelligence-based software solution that automates billing, verification and payouts for health and long-term care insurers. The application runs on the group's own T Cloud Public infrastructure.
Buyback keeps rolling
Management continues to lean on capital measures to underpin its market presence. A disclosure published yesterday showed the company repurchased a further 3,292,319 of its own shares during the trading week of September 21 to 25. Since the current program began on August 10, the cumulative volume has reached 17,298,084 shares.
Bernstein steps back, merger questions linger
The operational momentum contrasts sharply with the mood among analysts. On Friday, Bernstein downgraded the stock from "outperform" to "market perform" and cut its price target to 28.10 euros from 37 euros, citing growing doubts about a possible merger involving US subsidiary T-Mobile US and intensifying competition in the German broadband market.
Investor-side activity has added further fuel to the debate. According to Reuters Breakingviews on September 21, the group's pronounced geographic dependence on T-Mobile US is under discussion, which could prompt the Bonn company to weigh acquisitions in Europe. A Reuters report on September 3 had already made public the involvement of Elliott Investment Management, which is said to have come out against a merger with T-Mobile US. While the Cloudflare cooperation underscores the expansion of the core European business, the questions surrounding the US engagement remain the dominant theme for shareholders.
What's next on the calendar
Attention now shifts to two upcoming company events. On Monday, October 5, Deutsche Telekom hosts its AI Investor Day, focused on the commercial applications of artificial intelligence. Detailed figures follow roughly a month later, with third-quarter 2026 results scheduled for November 5 — a report likely to draw close scrutiny of margin development and customer growth given the current share price level.
