Deutsche Telekom Pairs Raised Guidance With a Spectrum Defence Against SpaceX

Deutsche Telekom beat Q3 forecasts and raised its 2026 outlook, but its 2027 buyback and dividend must be weighed against US spectrum needs.

Deutsche Telekom gave investors two stories this week, and the market has so far fixated on the less flattering one. Alongside an upgraded full-year outlook, Europe's largest telecoms group unveiled a dividend of 1.10 euros per share and a share buyback of up to 2 billion euros earmarked for 2027 — a package that left shareholders cold when it landed yesterday.

The scale of the capital-return plan matters because it now sits in direct competition with the group's spectrum ambitions. Management has been explicit that the proposed 2027 repurchases must be weighed against investment needs, with additional US frequencies at the top of that list. How T-Mobile US, 55%-owned by the Bonn-based group, secures its next tranche of airwaves — and on what terms — will shape how much cash is left over for investors.

A Quarter That Beat the Bar

The operating numbers themselves offered little to complain about. For the third quarter of 2026, Deutsche Telekom reported group revenue of 31.1 billion euros, an organic increase of 5.5%. Adjusted EBITDA after lease costs climbed 8.0% organically to 12.2 billion euros.

Those figures fed straight into an upgraded forecast. The group now expects adjusted EBITDA AL of around 47.6 billion euros for 2026, with free cash flow AL guided to roughly 20.1 billion euros. Deutsche Bank Research kept its "Buy" rating and 40-euro price target unchanged following the release.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Höttges Draws the Battle Lines

Chief executive Tim Höttges used the occasion to push back at SpaceX's ambitions in mobile connectivity, arguing that T-Mobile US's deep portfolio of high-quality spectrum is a moat that would-be entrants cannot easily cross. Building comparable terrestrial coverage, by his estimate, would require investment of at least 200 billion euros — a figure that underpins his case for the incumbent network.

He also pointed to a detail that shapes everyday demand: 80% of mobile phone calls in the United States are made from inside buildings. For a newcomer, matching that indoor coverage would be a formidable engineering and financial undertaking.

Yet Deutsche Telekom is not betting solely on towers and spectrum. Together with Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone, it intends to bid for MSS frequencies to support direct-to-handset satellite services in Europe — without operating any satellites of its own. The alliance approach lets the operators add a satellite layer to their offerings while sidestepping the cost of a dedicated fleet, a markedly different route from building a full satellite system from scratch.

Beyond the Core Business

Two other developments rounded out the week. T-Systems and Sparxity signed a letter of intent on Tuesday to cooperate on energy-efficient AI computing infrastructure, with a first rollout targeted for 2028. Separately, the European Central Bank disclosed on 30 October that it had selected Deutsche Telekom Business Solutions and Nexi Payments as joint service providers for the network connectivity of its digital euro platform. The contract took effect on 28 September and will initially support the platform's pilot phase.

For investors, the tension is plain. The network and spectrum base is the group's strongest card, provided it holds its value against new competitive threats. Reinforcing it costs money that would otherwise flow back to shareholders — which is why the terms T-Mobile US obtains for fresh spectrum, and the pace at which the European satellite plans advance, now carry as much weight as the quarterly beat itself.
