Deutsche Telekom's AI Savings Roadmap Collides With SpaceX's Spectrum Ambitions

Deutsche Telekom shares slid 8.6% to EUR 24.70 after SpaceX agreed to buy low-band spectrum, raising US competition fears for T-Mobile US.

Deutsche Telekom shareholders had little time to digest the group's artificial intelligence strategy before a transatlantic development reshuffled their priorities. The Bonn-based carrier spent Monday outlining how automation and AI would trim costs and open new revenue streams. By Friday, its stock had tumbled 8.6% to EUR 24.70, dragging it back toward a 52-week low of EUR 23.54.

The trigger came from the United States. SpaceX has agreed to acquire a nationwide low-band spectrum portfolio from Grain Management, a deal Reuters reported as the catalyst for a broad selloff across European telecom equities. The transaction still requires FCC approval, meaning it is not yet a completed purchase. The portfolio covers 800 MHz spectrum with up to 14 MHz of paired frequencies.

Why the Market Reacted So Sharply

The anxiety centers on T-Mobile US, in which Deutsche Telekom holds a 54% majority stake. That business has served as the group's primary growth engine in recent years, which explains why investors responded so viscerally to news from overseas. The valuation of the DAX-listed parent is tightly bound to the operational strength of its American arm.

The frequencies SpaceX is acquiring could theoretically support new mobile offerings, raising the specter of tougher competition. Established US carriers, however, have poured tens of billions into terrestrial networks for years, infrastructure that delivers high bandwidth and dependable connections in dense urban areas. Whether satellite-based spectrum can replicate that capacity in the mass market remains a matter of debate among industry experts. The distinction between expectation and outcome matters here: the market fears intensified competition for T-Mobile US, but no deterioration in the business has yet materialized.

Europe's Efficiency Drive Offers a Partial Counterweight

At its AI investor day in Bonn on Monday, Deutsche Telekom laid out plans to deploy artificial intelligence and automation for cost reduction and incremental revenue. Outside the US, the group expects roughly EUR 1.1 billion in gross savings for 2027 compared with a 2023 baseline. By 2030, indirect cost savings are projected to reach about EUR 2.5 billion against the same reference year.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

That geographic caveat is significant. The savings target excludes the US business, precisely where the competitive concerns are concentrated. It also represents an expectation rather than realized savings, and describes a long-term efficiency trajectory rather than a near-term offset to potential shifts in the American market.

The group's European foundation has been reinforced by several operational wins. Deutsche Telekom is pressing ahead with fiber network expansion, reporting orders for fiber connections across seven million housing units on October 6 and announcing EUR 800 million in further network investment. On the same day, management reaffirmed its annual guidance and medium-term financial targets at its investor day. Beyond the US, the company anticipates around EUR 250 million in AI-related enterprise revenue for 2026, climbing to EUR 800 million by 2030.

Analysts Stay Constructive, but Targets Diverge

Research houses responded positively to the AI capital markets day. UBS reaffirmed its buy rating and a EUR 35.10 price target on Wednesday. Deutsche Bank Research reiterated its buy call with a EUR 40 target on Tuesday. Goldman Sachs adjusted its price target from EUR 40 to EUR 38 on October 5 while keeping its buy recommendation intact.

A positive rating does not automatically translate into unchanged expectations, as the Goldman move illustrates. All of these analyst actions predate Friday's reaction to the SpaceX news, meaning they do not fully account for the new competitive landscape.

The Next Inflection Point

Investors now face two parallel narratives: concrete efficiency targets from Deutsche Telekom and an unresolved question about what the planned spectrum purchase could mean for T-Mobile US. The optimistic reading treats the recent decline as an exaggerated market response, supported by a stable European base and growing digital revenue streams. The pessimistic case rests on the group's dependence on American profits — should SpaceX deploy its newly acquired low-band portfolio quickly for competitive direct connections, it could heat up US competition considerably. Even if new entrants initially target only niche or rural regions, pressure on mobile tariffs looms. A fierce price war would weigh on T-Mobile US margins and, by extension, the parent company's dividend capacity. Heavy capital commitments to European fiber buildout would become harder to sustain if returns from overseas weaken.

Chart support near the annual low could provide a platform for consolidation. A sustained break below the 52-week low, however, would signal a prolonged period of weakness. The next decisive moment is already scheduled: Deutsche Telekom publishes its third-quarter 2026 financial results on November 5. Management will need to demonstrate the strength of the European business while offering the capital markets a well-grounded assessment of developments surrounding T-Mobile US. Until then, the debate over the US competitive landscape is likely to dominate the share price.
