Deutsche Telekom Sheds 8.6% as SpaceX Spectrum Deal Ignites US Competition Fears

A single transaction announcement from Elon Musk's rocket-and-satellite empire was enough to knock 8.6% off Deutsche Telekom's share price on Friday, sending the Bonn-based carrier down to EUR 24.70 and back toward territory it has not visited since touching a 52-week low of EUR 23.54.
The trigger came from across the Atlantic, where SpaceX disclosed an agreement to acquire a nationwide 800-MHz spectrum portfolio from Grain Management. Reuters reported the deal, which remains subject to regulatory approval, and the market read it as a prelude to a full-scale Starlink Mobile push into mainstream wireless service. European telecom stocks sold off broadly in sympathy.
Because Deutsche Telekom controls 54% of T-Mobile US, the anxiety traveled straight to the parent company's equity. The American unit has served as the group's principal growth engine for years, which explains why a headline about low-band airwaves in the United States can move a DAX heavyweight so violently. Investors are effectively being forced to weigh one question: does a satellite operator with fresh spectrum genuinely threaten T-Mobile's margins, or is the market overshooting?
Bulls point to a European business that keeps delivering
The cautious camp has plenty of counterarguments. Incumbent US carriers have poured tens of billions annually into terrestrial networks built for high bandwidth and dependable coverage in dense urban areas, infrastructure that satellite-based alternatives have yet to prove they can match at mass-market scale. Whether orbital frequencies can substitute for that capacity remains a live dispute among industry analysts.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
On the home front, Deutsche Telekom has been stacking up operational wins. Fiber rollout momentum continued with the announcement on October 6 of orders covering seven million housing units, alongside a commitment of EUR 800 million for further network expansion. Management reinforced its full-year guidance and medium-term targets at an AI investor day on October 5, where it flagged roughly EUR 2.5 billion in indirect-cost savings from deeper technology adoption. Outside the US, the company is targeting about EUR 250 million in AI-related enterprise revenue for 2026, scaling to EUR 800 million by 2030.
Content rights provided another thread of continuity. Deutsche Telekom extended its exclusive media package for Germany's third-division football with the German Football Association through the 2030/31 season, covering all 380 matches per campaign plus the relegation playoffs.
Analysts hold the line despite the selloff
Research desks have not budged. UBS reaffirmed its Buy rating on October 7 with a EUR 35.10 price target, as analyst Polo Tang cited the group's innovation pipeline, heavy capital spending and solid growth prospects. Goldman Sachs trimmed its target to EUR 38 from EUR 40 on October 5 while keeping a Buy recommendation, according to dpa-AFX, and other sector watchers confirmed their positive calls over the same stretch.
The bear case rests squarely on dependency. Should SpaceX convert its newly acquired low-band holdings into competitive direct-to-device offerings quickly, price pressure could build in the US market even if new entrants initially target rural or niche coverage. A sustained tariff war would eat into T-Mobile US margins and, by extension, the parent's dividend capacity. Meanwhile, the capital-intensive European fiber build absorbs significant cash that becomes harder to generate if returns from overseas weaken.
November 5 looms as the next real test
Chartists see the EUR 23.54 annual low as the line in the sand. A durable break below it would signal a longer period of weakness; holding above it gives the discounted valuation room to consolidate. Either way, the next decisive input is already scheduled. Deutsche Telekom reports third-quarter 2026 financial results on November 5, when management will need to demonstrate the strength of the European franchise and, more critically, give the capital markets a credible read on the competitive landscape surrounding T-Mobile US. Until then, the US wireless debate is likely to dictate where the shares trade.
