Deutz Analysts Split on Upside as Insiders Back the Turnaround

MPCM sets EUR 19 target, Bernstein EUR 12.40, as Deutz shares slip 1.0% to EUR 10.72 ahead of November 5 interim results.

Two brokerage notes landed on Deutz this Tuesday, both bullish, yet poles apart on how much room the Cologne engine maker's stock actually has. MPCM reiterated its "Buy" rating with a price target of EUR 19, while Bernstein Research kept its "Outperform" call and a EUR 12.40 target ahead of the company's interim results. Analyst Stefan Augustin at MPCM expects a sharply higher order intake, though he cautions that actual engine production remains stuck at a low level.

The gap between the two targets — nearly EUR 7 — frames the debate now swirling around the stock. Shares slipped 1.0% in Tuesday trading to EUR 10.72, but the equity is still up 26% since the start of the year.

That divergence in analyst expectations sits against a backdrop of cost-cutting and reorganization. Roughly a week ago, Berenberg raised its target for Deutz to EUR 16.50, with analyst Lasse Stueben pointing to the FFG acquisition as a way for the company to open itself more strongly to the defense sector and improve its margin profile. Berenberg had already assigned the "Buy" rating on October 6.

At the same time, Handelsblatt reported on plans for sweeping job reductions at the group. As many as 400 positions could go, with around 100 already cut or in the process of being eliminated. A further 300 reductions — concentrated in the small-engine business — have been agreed internally. Deutz declined to comment on the reports when approached.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutz?

The pressure is rooted in weaker demand for smaller engines used in tractors and lift trucks, which has weighed on utilization at the home plant in Cologne. Falling orders in the civilian business are forcing the company to trim capacity to protect profitability in a difficult market.

Insiders Open Their Wallets

Confidence in the strategy is coming from the supervisory board itself. Board member Dr. Rudolf Maier disclosed a purchase of Deutz shares worth EUR 99,540.00. Days later, fellow board member Dr. Dietmar Voggenreiter reported a buy of EUR 53,400.00. Combined, the two insiders have committed EUR 152,940.00.

The purchases come as Deutz pushes into higher-margin segments. More than a month ago, the company announced the takeover of defense supplier FFG — a move that has coincided with a 13.8% decline in the share price since the deal was unveiled.

Technical Picture and the November Test

On the charts, the long-term trend offers a reference point. At its most recent close of EUR 10.83 on Monday, the stock held 3.7% above its 200-day moving average of EUR 10.44.

Investors will get a clearer read on the actual business performance and order intake early next month. Deutz has scheduled the release of its quarterly statement for the first nine months of 2026 for November 5, 2026. That report should show how much of the order recovery analysts are anticipating has already made its way into the numbers — and whether the strategic repositioning is starting to bear operational fruit.
