Deutz Balances 400 Job Cuts Against Berenberg Upgrade and Ukraine Deliveries

Deutz weighs up to 400 job cuts in its small-engine unit while Berenberg and ODDO BHF raise targets and the first GEREON systems reach Ukraine.

Investors in Deutz are being pulled in two directions this week, with reports of deep workforce reductions colliding against fresh analyst optimism and tangible progress in the company's push beyond conventional engines.

Up to 400 Positions at Risk in Small-Engine Unit

According to Handelsblatt, the Cologne-based engine manufacturer is preparing to shed as many as 400 jobs, concentrated in its small-engine division where demand has softened noticeably. Roughly 100 roles have already been eliminated or are in the process of being wound down, while internal agreement has reportedly been reached on cutting a further 300. Deutz has so far declined to comment on the reports when approached.

The prospect of restructuring in the legacy business has made the market jittery. Over the past 30 days, the stock has given up 16 percent.

Berenberg Lifts Target, Backs FFG Acquisition

Offsetting that gloom, Berenberg raised its price target on Deutz from EUR 13.00 to EUR 16.50 on Wednesday while reaffirming its "Buy" rating. Analyst Lasse Stueben pointed to July's announced takeover of FFG as a pivotal move in the group's transformation, arguing the deal significantly expands Deutz's defence operations and should lift its margin profile.

Ulm Ships First GEREON Units to Ukraine

That strategic pivot is already producing hardware. Working alongside partner ARX Robotics, Deutz delivered its first GEREON ground systems to Ukraine's armed forces on 29 September. The units rolled off the line at the company's Ulm plant and form part of a broader procurement order. The tie-up pairs robotics development expertise with the engine maker's industrial manufacturing capacity, marking a deliberate widening of its portfolio into military and government applications.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutz?

Deutz has also been building out other technological footholds. More than a month ago it struck a partnership with Hypercraft covering unmanned ground vehicles and mobile drive systems, with the two sides evaluating the use of Deutz's hybrid, battery and energy systems.

Capital Raise and Insider Buying Strengthen the Balance Sheet

Underpinning the whole effort is a sturdier financial base. Deutz finalised a cash capital increase just over three weeks ago, placing 15,263,810 new shares at EUR 11.70 each for gross proceeds of roughly EUR 179 million. The inflow gives management room to manoeuvre through the transformation and the build-out of new business lines.

Insiders have been signalling their own conviction as well. Supervisory board member Dr. Dietmar Voggenreiter picked up 5,000 Deutz shares on 24 September at EUR 11.18 apiece via Tradegate, a transaction worth EUR 55,900 in total.

ODDO BHF Also Turns More Bullish

The capital markets have taken note. ODDO BHF lifted its target on Deutz from EUR 16.40 to EUR 16.50 on 24 September, according to media reports, while keeping an "Outperform" rating. The optimism rests on expectations that new application areas will contribute an increasing share of overall business going forward.

Shares added 1.4 percent on Tuesday to close at EUR 11.27, bringing the year-to-date gain to 33 percent.

November 5 Report to Put Numbers to the Story

How forcefully cost pressure in the traditional business and the repositioning are showing up in the financials will become clearer in a few weeks. Deutz has scheduled publication of its quarterly statement for the first three quarters of the current year — and its third-quarter 2026 report — for 5 November.
