Two supervisory board members at Deutz have put their own money behind the Cologne engine maker's restructuring, even as the company weighs deep cuts at its home plant and prepares to report quarterly figures on November 5, 2026.

Dr. Rudolf Maier bought 9,000 Deutz shares at EUR 11.06 apiece, a transaction worth EUR 99,540. Dr. Dietmar Voggenreiter acquired stock worth EUR 53,400 through Tradegate. Together, the two insiders committed EUR 152,940 — a signal that those closest to the company see value in its pivot toward higher-margin industrial and defense applications.

The purchases come at a delicate moment. Deutz shares were trading at EUR 10.84 in one reading and EUR 11.07 in another, the latter marking a modest daily gain of 0.5 percent. The stock sits above its 200-day moving average of EUR 10.44 and has climbed 28 percent since the start of the year, despite recent headwinds.

A Split Picture at the Cologne Plant

The operational reality in Deutz's legacy business tells a more complicated story. According to Handelsblatt, which cited insiders, the company is considering cutting as many as 400 positions. Roughly 100 of those jobs have already been eliminated or are in the process of being cut, while the potential removal of another 300 has been coordinated internally.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutz?

WDR reported a narrower range, saying 130 to 200 positions were initially under discussion at the Cologne-Porz site, with a maximum of up to 300 jobs at risk. The dpa news agency, citing informed sources, said 130 to 200 roles would likely disappear by the end of 2028, with up to 300 in a worst-case scenario.

Company spokesman Lars Boelke confirmed to WDR that talks with employee representatives are ongoing but stressed that no final decision has been made. A separate company representative declined to comment to dpa. The cuts are concentrated in the small-engine segment, where weakening demand and the phasing out of certain model lines are weighing on results — a backdrop also highlighted by the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger.

Berenberg Sees Room to Run

Against that backdrop, Berenberg raised its price target for Deutz from EUR 13.00 to EUR 16.50 on October 7, keeping a "Buy" rating. Analyst Lasse Stueben pointed to the acquisition of FFG more than a month ago, which he said meaningfully strengthens the company's position in the defense sector and improves its margin profile.

The expansion push extends beyond that deal. Roughly three weeks ago, Deutz agreed a partnership with Hypercraft, and about two weeks ago it delivered Gereon vehicles to Ukraine — moves that underscore efforts to open new application areas away from the conventional engine business.

What November 5 Will Reveal

The next hard data point arrives on November 5, 2026, when Deutz publishes its quarterly statement for the first three quarters of 2026, followed by a conference call for analysts and investors. The report should clarify how severely weakness in smaller combustion engines is bleeding into group earnings and how restructuring costs will be quantified. Until then, the market is left to weigh whether the defense pivot and new partnerships can offset the drag from the legacy business.
