Deutz Directors Put EUR 152,940 Behind Defense Pivot as Cologne Faces Headcount Decision

Two Deutz supervisory board members bought shares worth EUR 152,940 as the engine maker shifts toward defense and weighs job cuts in Cologne.

Two supervisory board members have opened their own wallets just as Deutz navigates one of the more delicate stretches in its recent history. Dr. Rudolf Maier picked up shares worth EUR 99,540.00, while Dr. Dietmar Voggenreiter added a position valued at EUR 53,400.00 — a combined EUR 152,940.00 vote of confidence in the Cologne engine maker's strategic direction.

That direction increasingly points away from the company's combustion-engine roots. More than a month ago Deutz announced the acquisition of defense supplier FFG, a move designed to reduce its reliance on conventional drivetrains. Berenberg analyst Lasse Stueben has framed the deal as a pivotal transformation step that deepens the group's exposure to the defense sector and lifts its margin profile. On October 6 the private bank reaffirmed its "Buy" rating and raised its price target on the stock from EUR 13.00 to EUR 16.50.

Pressure at the Home Plant

The backdrop to these boardroom purchases is far less comfortable. Demand for smaller engines — the kind fitted to tractors and industrial lift trucks — has weakened noticeably, weighing on utilization at the Cologne site and keeping costs under strain. Media reports have circulated about looming cutbacks; company spokesman Lars Boelke confirmed that talks with employee representatives are underway but stressed that no final decision on the scale of any reduction has been made.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutz?

Figures on the potential scope vary. According to WDR, Deutz initially plans to shed between 130 and 200 positions in Cologne, while Handelsblatt reported that as many as 400 jobs could go in total. Part of that figure is said to be already in execution, with the larger remainder internally agreed. The company declined to comment on the media reports.

Market Reaction and Technical Picture

Investors have been weighing cyclical risk against strategic upside. The shares closed Monday at EUR 10.83, a gain of 26 percent since the start of the year, yet still well below the 52-week high of EUR 13.39. Since the FFG announcement, the stock has slipped 13.8 percent. At the most recent close, the price sat 3.7 percent above its 200-day moving average of EUR 10.44 — a level that offers some orientation on the longer-term trend.

What November 5 Will Reveal

Attention now turns to the quarterly statement covering the first through third quarters of 2026, scheduled for release on November 5, 2026. The report should clarify how heavily weak demand for smaller aggregates is weighing on operating profit, and whether the realignment is already contributing. For the share price going forward, the decisive question is how quickly the shift toward higher-margin defense work can offset softness in the legacy engine business.
